But the big winner of the day was 14-year-old Grace Charnesky of Rochester Hills, when she was named the 5K race's overall female winner with a time of 24:07. The 5K's overall male winner, Algonquin resident Michael Connolly, 24, came in a few minutes before her at 19:20.
The Run2Read event benefits Macomb Literacy Partners and Oakland Literacy Council and their efforts in promoting literacy throughout Macomb and Oakland counties.
"We had a great time at the event, and the weather couldn't have been any better," said Macomb Literacy Partners director Ken Lampar in a news release. "We are thankful to everyone who came out to support us — including our volunteers, runners, walkers and their friends and family — and to our sponsors, with their generous donations. Everyone helped make Run2Read a wonderful event that we look forward to repeating next year."
Next year's Run2Read event will take place on the same certified course at Stony Creek Metropark, also on the second Saturday in June — June 8, 2013.
