Summer is officially here and if today's weather is any indication of the season to come, you may want to throw a few more ice trays in the freezer now.

Temperatures are expected to hit the low 90s today, with sunny skies all day long. At exactly 7:08 p.m., the sun will be at its farthest point north in the sky, directly above the Tropic of Cancer, and we in Shelby Township and Utica will celebrate the summer solstice, or first day of summer. 

Being that this is also the longest day of the year, here are five ways you and your family can make the most of your extra time.

Enjoy an Outdoor Concert

The Mall at Partridge Creek features Dave Hamilton today from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The concert is held in the mall's center court, near the movie theater, and is part of the Motor City Co-op Summer Sounds series.

Have the kids wear their bathing suits and stop by the pop jet fountains near Parisian to cool off before the show.

2012 Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival Opens in New Baltimore

New Baltimore's annual fishfly festival kicks off today, with the Midway opening at 3 p.m., the Queen's Pageant starting at 6:30 p.m. and live music running from 6-11 p.m. Find a full festival schedule here.

Ride the World's Tallest Inflatable Slide

Take a spin on a three-story inflatable water slide Stony Creek Metropark's Eastwood Beach. .

Tickets to ride the slide are $1 per ride, $7 per hour or $20 per day.

The slide is open all week, weather and wind conditions permitting.

Square Dancing at Lake St. Clair Metropark

Why not? Square dancing is held on Wednesdays, now through Aug. 29 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lake St. Clair Metropark, formerly Metro Beach. A beginners’ class is held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and an advanced class from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The dancing takes place at the Thomas S. Welsh Activity Center. The event is free with a vehicle entry permit–$5 per car.
