Board to Review $52,000 Compensation Package for New Deputy Supervisor

The Shelby Township board is scheduled to vote on a salary and benefits package for an at-will deputy supervisor Tuesday.

The role of deputy supervisor may be making a comeback in Shelby Township this year provided the board approves the position’s proposed $52,000 compensation package at tonight’s township meeting.

The position of at-will deputy supervisor has not existed in Shelby Township for some time, but a newly proposed compensation package, which includes vacation time, health care coverage, life insurance, disability and a 401(a) pension plan, would pave the way for a new hire.

Supervisor Rick Stathakis is scheduled to ask the board to adopt a resolution to authorize the compensation package at Tuesday’s board meeting.

The board meets at 7 p.m. in the municipal building at 52700 Van Dyke.

What is going on in this Township? Dropping the ball on Cherry Creek and losing all that money, getting sued for every horrible decision the board makes, not listening to the residents, etc etc......now the Supervisor wants a Deputy Supervisor!!!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought the Township was broke?!?! GOD! I can't stand this Board of Trustees!!!!

Crazy!!! But crazy is the norm with these clowns. I think there is a real conflict of interest here. Clearly Stathakis will do away with anyone who votes against him, so should a elected-Trustee be allowed to be Rick's right hand man????

And isn't Doug Wozniak too busy with his successful law firm to take on a full-time job under Stathakis? Is it technically a full-time job? Conflict of interest??????

Just great. Now we can add a deputy Supervisor to the deputy Clerk that they got last year. The two combined will cost the Township over $100k per year. Can you imagine the yowls of protest you would have heard over there had Mr. Maccarone and Mrs. Kowal tried to hire deupties? I can hear it now.

Just to be fair, it was Kowal that hired her neighbor and baby sitter as deputy clerk and decided to pay her 60 grand that got the ball rolling on this deputy business. By law they have to have deputies but the positions were always non paying positions, until then, and now.
I just think it would be better to add a clerk typist to answer phones at half the cost instead of making the deputy supervisor position a paying job. This is over 25 dollars an hour,,,, for what? A political appointed position where no qualifications are required? ... Bad move!!

Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) spell out which township deputy positions shall (required) be appointed and which ones may (optional) be appointed. Excerpts from the laws are below:

Section 41.61
(2) The township supervisor may appoint a deputy township supervisor, who shall serve at the pleasure of the supervisor...In case of the absence, sickness, death, or other disability of the supervisor, the deputy shall possess the powers and perform the duties of the supervisor, except the deputy shall not have a vote on the township board. The deputy shall be paid by salary or otherwise as the township board determines appropriate.

Section 41.69
The township clerk shall appoint a deputy, who shall serve at the pleasure of the clerk...In case of the absence, sickness, death, or other disability of the clerk, the deputy shall possess the powers and perform the duties of the clerk, except the deputy shall not have a vote on the township board. The deputy shall be paid by salary or otherwise as the township board determines.

Section 41.77
(5) The treasurer shall appoint a deputy, who shall serve at the pleasure of the treasurer...The deputy, in case of the absence, sickness, death, or other disability of the treasurer, shall possess the powers and perform the duties of the treasurer, except the deputy shall not have a vote on the township board. The deputy shall be paid as the township board determines.

Russ... thanks for background on MCL.
Perhaps all the more reason to "object" to Stathakis request for an assistant "deputy" as the position as defined by MCL is clearly optional. Maybe the taxpayers should mandate that Stathakis spend 8:30-5:00 (M-F) in his Supervisor position only and then after 1 year if he can prove "document" that tasks within this job description exceed time available, then have a vote on this added Deputy position.
Otherwise, it clearly looks (and perception in this game is everything) that he is simply trying to avail himself with more time at taxpayer's expense to mind his "real business interests", which is the marketing of insurance products.

Wow! What kind of signal is this sending to township employee unions???
In the very near future the Shelby Board is going to tackle the issue of retirement pensions/benefits for Township employees-- where the need to drastically cut back costs to police/fire employees is imperative for the long-term financial health of the Community. Leading up to this inevitable confrontation with the Unions, a smart Board would take every step to cut every cost and collect every $ of tax revenue to demonstrate that fairness across the spectrum is being applied. But what does this Board do? They grant tax waivers to Cherry Creek operators last week and now want to hire assistants for themselves. If we have Deputy Clerks... Deputy Supervisors and Deputy Treasurers, one might easily conclude there is no need for their bosses. At a bare minimum these decisions will likely have a negative influence on the upcoming Union negotiations-- Not too bright Mr. Stathakis.

The police negotiations are presently on going and the goal is to convert the defined pension plan to defined contribution.... this will go to arbitration and if the police win there will be layoffs or a tax increas request, no way around this.

If you think about it, Deputy Dawg might be an improvement over some of these people.

Will anyone stand up and protest this decision or will we let it slide by? Email your representatives and protest these kinds of board decisions. Once it's done this position will be set in stone and will be a political favor at taxpayers expense for all future supervisors.
Think about it, if a Nightingale gets elected they wouuld appoint their brother as deputy with no qualifications needed.

IMO Stathakis was the better of bad alternatives for Supervisor. During the campaign he received a lot of negative publicity for spending time during Township business hours running his Insurance business during the previous 4 years. My thought at the time was not a problem as long as he can do both jobs effectively and not compromise Township interests. But to now try and hire an assistant within 90 days of the election to help him do this job, basically says he does not have the time to do it and that is really preposterous. Especially when everyone else is being asked to cut back costs! I will be glad to send an email to someone, but who?
The only person on the Shelby Board who is an 'even keel' on most decisions is Doug Wozniak and he conveniently was not at the last Board meeting where the Cherry Creek decision was ramrodded through. Makes one think about the timing of these decisions.

I frankly am getting tired of being 1 of about 4-5 residents showing up at the board meetings to question the elected officials about their actions. Show up, folks!!

Wow Stathekis thinks that he's saving money by addition. Until he started working more hours at his business he was good with what he's got. Now we have to pay. I agree with what was said, just hire another part time clerk typist or a co~op student. But much like another mayor [ex] he's got the people fooled. Much like the citizens of Detroit did, Shelby will keep voting him in, so he can use Shelby as his own playground. Rick at least hire a Shelby resident. As a matter of fact Rick, if you truly believe in Shelby Twp. move your business into Shelby. It will at least save travel time between businesses. Go Nick! Way to go. You got Ms. Flynn to maybe cost Shelby more money. Strange how Kwame Stathekis didnt shut down Ms. Flynn outburst.

Mr Stathakis sat there with a dumb look like he didn’t know what was going on. Very similar to the night the strange fat man in the audience was holding up signs. Perhaps Mr Stathakis needs glasses and a hearing aid to know what’s happening at the township meetings,
