Classical Harpist Wows Audience At Free Concert

Classical harpist Onita Sanders performs at Evola Music Center as part of Shelby Township Library's Thursdays In Concert.

Shelby Township Library’s Thursdays In Concert presented classical harpist Onita Sanders Thursday at Evola Music Center in Shelby.

Sanders began playing the harp in high school when she attended Cass Technical High School. Her talent, poise and voice left Thursday's audience in awe as she played a selection of classical, Mexican folk and Broadway songs.

Sue Ferrell, adult services librarian at Shelby Township Library, dedicates part of her time to make these concerts a success. Ferrell said the whole purpose of the concerts is to combine music and education.

Sanders has performed for the library in the past and was such a success, Ferrell asked her to return. She has many accomplishments throughout her career, one of which is being honored by the Top Ladies of Distinction Organization as one of the outstanding women in music.

Not only does Sanders have a passion for music, she enjoys working with children and parents.

“My approach musically is more a concert demonstration,” Sanders said.

The performances are not your typical concert; they are interactive, educational and personal. The audience is encouraged to request songs, contribute to the music and even play the harp at the end of the concert.

The UAW Local 177, the Robert Ferrell Family and the Shelby Community Foundation provide funding for the concerts.

The next Thursdays In Concert will present The Paint Creek Boys, a bluegrass/country/acoustic group, at 6:30 p.m. on April 7.  All concerts are free to the public and take place at Evola Music Center on 23 mile between Schoenherr and Van Dyke.
