$8.25 an hour to stand on your feet for prolonged periods of time? In 2012? And this is a job worth writing about? Wow!

$8.25 an hour amounts to a whopping $330 a week before taxes. So what's the net weekly pay? $280 a week, maybe. This job straddles the poverty line. If this job is your only income, you are officially Poor.

Let's say uncle sam only takes $300 a month in taxes. That leaves you with $1,000 to pay rent (lets say $500 for a real cr*p hole), pay your car bill (lets say $100), pay health insurance ($200), car insurance ($100), utilities (at least $100), cell phone ($50)... See, we are already over budget and we haven't spent any money on clothing or food.

How is someone supposed to eat on $8.25 an hour? How is someone who makes $8.25 an hour supposed to go on a date? Woo a life partner? Pay for diapers? Baby food? School books? Student loans?

$8.25 an hour to stand on your feet and work a machine press is a not a job worth writing about. It is a slap in the face really, especially when you consider the present Right-2-Work fiasco.

Your right Ben, but to a 19 year old still living with Mom and Dad it might be a good introduction to the work force. Also a great incentive to ponder college.

And I agree. nobody can raise a family, make utility bills and eat on $8.50 an hour. It's hardly worth giving up unemployment pay for.

That's not all. Turns out that this company is one of those lucky few that were given tax abatements on the new equipment that they now pay minimum wage to operate.

Thanks Shelby Township Board! And a Merry Christmas to all the taxpayers and workers!

In two or three years they will only need to file for yet another abatement and receive it no questions asked.

Seems silly to me, Robots can do that kind of work more efficiently than humans. They would pay themselves off in less than 5 years.

Right to work? Are you kidding? This place would fold up shop and be off to Mexico in a heartbeat if anyone even mentioned a union over there. They would be out of Shelby too if they didn't get their tax abatement.

If you want a good laugh, go back and listen to the Supervisor's gratuitous comments at the Board meeting about an "uptick in the local economy" being the reason that this sweatshop needed a gift from the taxpayers. Really disgusting. I'm sure that 99.9% of the people that voted for this guy will never figure this out.

We need to call their bluff once in a while and see if they would really go elsewhere. When you have the right friends in the right places there’s no need to worry.

I'm not a union member, but I am sure I am making the wages I am because of the unions. If they were to die out us non-union workers would really feel it. With them being as weak as they already are, it amazes me that the kids I put thru college make as little as they are. Almost equivalent to what I made at their age with less college.

We need those unions! Believe me!

Right to work doesn't change the unions. It simply gives an American a choice to join or not.

It would surprise me if anyone wouldn't want to join a union if the job they applied for was in a union shop! Their benefits far out way non-union jobs. I wish I could, No dues are worth the loss in overtime pay, paid time off, pention, sick days, etc. You don't get those otherwise

Corruption?, Greed?, Kickbacks?, Special Interest Groups? These terms keep popping into my mind when I hear mention of Shelby Township and tax abatements.
Perhaps just perhaps Shelby Township wouldn’t be running in the red if they stood up to some of these companies who seek tax abatements repeatedly and said if you want to do business in Shelby you also have to pay your fair share of the taxes. Who do these people think they are? It’s not who they are but who they know. Stathakis, Flynn and Filar are always very quick to approve these abatements. Maybe if they had a backbone and weren’t worried about themselves this township would still have a budget in the black. Where can I sign up for a tax abatement on my condominium? It seems like it should be quite easy.
