Michael Flynn Announces Plans to Run for Shelby Township Treasurer

Current Trustee Michael Flynn has announced he plans on running in the November elections for township treasurer.

Shelby Township Trustee Michael Flynn is hoping residents have taken note of his fiscal policies and will vote him in as treasurer during the 2012 elections.

Flynn has until May 15 to turn in signed petitions to officially enter the race, which he said he plans on collecting once the weather breaks.

However, he told Patch he formed a candidate committee last year and already has a star-studded fundraiser planned to help fund his political campaign.

The campaign will officially kick off March 14 with a dinner at the Palazzo Grande. For ticket information, click here.

Flynn, 41, was voted in as Trustee in 2008, along with Supervisor Rick Stathakis and Trustee Doug Wozniak.

“I care about this community. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t,” said the 14-year Shelby Township resident, who has been the subject of two separate .

Flynn, who owns Shelby-based pneumatic equipment supplier Plant Maintenance Direct, said he believes his work in the private sector gives him an understanding of “real world” financial responsibilities.

As a trustee, Flynn said he has worked hard to rein in out of control spending plans by previous township boards.

“We put a stop to outlandish building projects, and balanced the budget without layoffs or tax increases,” he said.

Since the current Shelby Township budget is balanced, Flynn said his primary focus would be on dealing with pension and legacy issues.

“At this point we need to deal with some of those long-term problems. ... It’s something that has to be addressed because the current business model is not a sustainable one,” Flynn told Patch.

Current Treasurer Paul Viar has not announced whether or not he’ll run for office in the next general elections.

Former police chief Robert Leman is the only other person who has announced his candidacy for the Shelby Township Board of Trustees. Leman has entered the supervisor’s race, and already filed the petitions necessary to run in the November general elections.

Hey Shelby Patch readers: We have to reel this in. Stick to the topic. Stop the name calling and fighting. Debate the issues. We won't allow comments that violate our terms — and that includes making abusive remarks about other users or people in the community.

The guy doesn't let people push him around or sway his vote with threats or intimidation. Seems everyone wants puppets in office who will short change the 70,000 residents in favor of their own special interest. I want leaders that can't be bullied.

If Mr. Flynn is serious about all of this he should organize a social event for the people. Maybe something fun like a meatloaf dinner where everyone can have a bite and get to know one another. I know people who like meatloaf who would definitely be there.

Huh? Meatloaf? What does anything Mr. Berz writes have to do with the story?
Even I don't go this far off topic.
The question is: Is Mike Flynn fiscally conservative enough to represent the taxpayers of shelby. Has he blown tax money on un needed things?
He saved 40 grand on fencing off the police building, he voted to sue ITC for clearcutting trees. His voting record is one of a concerned taxpayer, not a self serving, self entitled politician.

My only questions are: does his business harm taxpayers in general, do his business enterprises affect taxpayers? Does his business interfere with his ability to be equally fair to all taxpayers. The other candidate so far, Mrs. Manzella owns a business that directly affects tax revenue in Shelby Township and Has adversly done so, specifically for her campaign contributors...... is there really a choice if the welfare of taxpayers dollars are the chief concern? Of course, contributing to Manzella's campaign for treasurer might save me some cash down the road when I want to lower the taxable value of my property, I wouldn't want to burden the rest of Shelby with my own "special interest" payoff and special treatment.

I said it before and I'll say it again Mister Guarnieri. You bore me therefore instead of responding to you I'm going to go have some leftover meatloaf. It's the real kind. Not frozen. Mmmmmm

I am trying to stay in like with DECORUM and Roberts Rules as I write.
If I'm saying something wrong I will correct it. I don't want anybody to get angry with me over a simple debate.

I really think Shelby needs an entire new board and a new start. I would replace all of the board even though I do like some of the them. I hope we have some good candidates. From the candidates that have announced they are running I am not impress and do not feel it is an improvement from what we have now. Maybe by time the deadline is to run we will have a few more to choose from. I hope this comment fall into this debate topic.

Mr. Berz, this is a forum for debate, not to cater to either side. You bring up issues that no taxpayer should worry about, I tried to politly point you in a direction that taxpayers should care about. I don't care what you eat for dinner, where you live or if you dress in women's underwear as long as the majority of taxpayers are not adversely affected. If you discussed this at a debate you would be removed.
I agree with Mr. Peter's, The alternatives offered to what we have now are severely lacking. It's depressing but in order to present my opinions on the publication about "the subject" I have to look at Mr. Flynn's voting record only and as of now he seems to have the best interest of the taxpaying majority at heart compared to the record of other candidates to date.
