Mother, Son and Roommate Charged In Theft Spree

The trio, who had been living in a Chesterfield Township apartment and allegedly swiped goods and even a car from local properties, were arraigned Wednesday on felony charges. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A Chesterfield Township woman, her son and his friend went on a theft spree late this month, swiping a slew of goods and even a vehicle from local properties, police said Wednesday.

The trio, who lived together in an apartment off Jefferson Avenue, were arraigned via video Wednesday in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore on felony charges, Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said.

According to Myers:

  • Joanne Hubbard, 40, faces a charge of receiving and concealing stolen property, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction. She was held in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.
  • Her son, Ted O'hearn, 18, was charged with a 20-year felony of first-degree home invasion, 10-year felony of concealing stolen firearm, five-year felony of unlawfully driving away an automobile/stolen vehicle, 15-year felony of second-degree home invasion and five-year felony of receiving and concealing stolen property more than $1,000. He was held on a $75,000 cash bond.
  • Steven Los, an 18 year old from Clay Township who had been staying with his friend and his mother, faces the same charges as O'hearn. He was held on a $50,000 cash bond.

The felony counts stem from a high number of vehicle break-ins reported Sunday from residents along Jefferson Avenue and nearby neighborhoods. Many of the victims told police they left their cars unlocked overnight and had items such as GPS units, cameras, iPods, phones and loose change missing.

On Tuesday, residents in the same neighborhoods called 911 to report their homes were broken into during the afternoon. A homeowner on Wand Drive reported that thieves who broke into his home also stole his 2010 Jeep. Police said that they found the Jeep abandoned following an accident.

Police said another resident on Sugarbush said two men broke a window by her front door but ran away when they realized she was home. A different home owner along Jefferson called 911 to say two men with the same description were fleeing his home with his belongings.

A Chesterfield officer was patrolling on foot when he saw the suspects running toward Patty Street, where a gray Chevrolet Blazer awaited them. The police officer told others on the force that the men were carrying suitcases and backpacks. Police soon closed in on them and placed them under arrest.

A witness told police that the trio live together in an apartment and were spotted unloading several bags from what is believed to be the stolen white Jeep earlier that day. A search of the apartment led investigators to the items reported stolen within the past few days, police said.

Anyone in the area who had property stolen may call Detective Scott Blackwell at 586-949-3269. Detectives are also seeking help to identify a large amount of the stolen goods.

We were one of these victims, my son's car hit the hardest, never thinking that our neighborhood would be involved in anything like this. But it will only most likely will get worse before it gets better. Where these 3 scum came from, there are more just like them. Good job by the Chesterfield police force keeping it's residents safe. We appreciate everything you do.

the last time i checked somebody stealing change out of a car was life threatening, yes they deserved to get in trouble for their actions but for you to call all three of this individuals scum makes you no better than they are, you have no idea what the situation is what actually happened and i dont think your sons car got hit the hardest unless it was the jeep wrapped around the tree

Sue: I'm sorry to hear your family was affected by this. What was taken from your son's car? Good thing no one was hurt during these crimes.

well first i want to say sorry to anybody who was affected by this act of stupidity i am truly sorry for what has happened there was no reason for any of this and now to clear some stuff up my mother had no part in any of that i called her and lied to her about what i was doing she had no idea that i had done what i had done she is not "scum" as it was so diligently phrased and neither am i iv done wrong yes done more wrong than others yes but none of what was said was mature or tasteful and as for ms.caza your sister hit me and i grabbed her and stopped her and i don't know what happened to her belongings what am i going to do with her shoes or her hoodie and why would i want her phone when i had the same one she was drunk and me and my friends had to leave i had to work and they had school that's why she didn't get a ride home she also went to that party with no ride home to begin with i didn't drive her there so why would i drive her home after she hit me for telling her no?

and again i am sorry this is a public apology to all who it may concern
