Poll: Has Shelby Township Resolved 2012 Priorities List?
A public meeting is set for tonight to establish the 2013 Top 10 Priorities for Shelby Township.
Shelby Township is inviting the public to join in a Community Visioning Exercise Tuesday evening to set the township top 10 priorities for 2013.
The special meeting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at Cherry Creek Golf Course and Banquet Center, located at 52000 Cherry Creek Dr., south of 24, east of Van Dyke.
Several Board members conduct the meeting and ask the community to give suggestions. Last year, the participants were asked to vote at the meeting on the most important they think the township is facing.
Supervisor Rick Stathakis has said the community input, in conjunction with the Board's perspective, has helped the township formalize a guide for spending.
In 2012, the township's list of priorities were:
- Address police and fire pensions
- Resolve court building issues
- Redevelop the former Visteon/Ford location
- Improve local roads
- Share services with other communities
- Reduce operational costs
- Address library building needs
- Implement economic development initiatives
- Explore Soccer City options
- Expand existing technology and increasing technology training
Do you have suggestions for the 2013 priorities list? If so, write it in the comments below.

Actually, can we ditto this list for 2013? The top 5 are excellent.

This list should not be ditto'd. The To-Do list should be addressed, not kicked on down the road yet again. But, hey, whatever the King says, Matt agrees.

Redevelope Visteon is #3...Who care if the land sits vacant. there is alot of vacant land in Shelby Twp....the #2 issue will work itself out. but should not be #2.
BUT ROADS...? if you dont live on Van Dyke then your road is not being looked after. Auburn between Dequindre & Hays is a Patch-me mess.
There needs to be a plan for 23 mile to go around Yates Cider Mill with a 4 lane road so it can ultimatly connect to the posibilty of a 4 lane Avon road in Oakland County. But NO.... We widen Van Dyke so it can narrow down when it enters Washington Twp where the lack of a wide right-of-way prevents it ever being widened

Pamela:
They have NOT been re-elected yet. You can still select a new supervisor and (2) new trustees.

"Reduce Operational Costs" Does that really need to be listed as a priority? That's like putting "Tie my shoes" on my list of daily chores.

Soccer City? How many years has that been a Top 10 priority?

The Court issue, again!?! It's been 4 years since Stathakis ran for office touting his desire to settle this issue once and for all, and where has that gotten us? Except for embarrassed by the fact that it is patently illegal to put the issue up for vote.

"Expand technology and increase training"? You must be kidding me.
How about addressing the fact that there are more than a handful of vacant grocery stores and strip malls.

Instead of whining, give your input. It's easy to sit back and whine about problems but a real man (or woman) contributes to solutions and their actions do the talking.

When I see a problem, I put my reputation and all I have into publicizing it and fixing the issue, I don't just sit around and whine. I certainly don't kowtow to any political agenda that isn't positive for taxpayers. So stop whining and spit out solutions and ideas Mr. V.

Every recognized quality system speaks of Top 3 or Top 5 priority lists. More than that you are looking at too many items to give any one item the detailed attention it takes to resolve the issue. I believe that most of the items that were on the 2012 list of priorities were addressed. Unfortunately, virtually none were resolved. Anyone who is fully committed to solving issues takes a logical approach to determining the root cause, collect all required data, analyze all of the variables, assess any risks, develop solutions, implement and measure the effectiveness of the solution. To me it is irresponsible not to provide the residents with a status report on a regular basis so that they can see where we are in the resolution process, what steps have been completed, and what steps remain. The township supervisor is accountable to the residents. Period! Anything less fails the transparency litmus test.

Hmmm, seems I remember a status update just before almost every meeting and how almost every special interest in the township complains about it, even going so far as to walk out of meetings.
When exactly would you be willing to discuss the employee pension plan with citizens Mr. Erickson? In the privacy of an office one on one, how would you like the people to be informed.... separately, individually. I believe making the priorities public before meetings, as has been the case lately, shows an extraordinary level of transparency.
You speak of ideas as if you condemn them but every solution Mr. Erickson has produced.... wait... he hasn't told us any new ideas or solutions just complaining about nothing.... typical Democrat, or as Mr. Erickson seems to be a Republicrat that can't make a solid statement of solution about anything.
Yes, I will sit down and talk with you Mr. Erickson, as long as you don;t mind it being video taped and broadcast as I see fit whan we're done.

I believe a real priority would be to help the current Supervisor Mr Stathakis to set his sights and goals on a higher position such as the State Representative some place in the Upper Peninsula or possibly even Alaska. I’m sure those folks would be open to a guy who can save them 4.3 million dollars. Just an idea(lol).

Why are so many against saving money and keeping taxes low? Unless you feel some of the 4.1 million saved came out of your pocket?

I'll be willing to discuss the Police and Fire Pension deficit issue and any other issue in an open meeting so that everyone can be a part of the process. Further, I would be willing to share any pertinent documents for the public to view. Any update offered thus far by the township board has lacked the details of the plan in place to resolve the issue, the list of tasks completed to date, tasks remaining to be completed etc. Addressing an issue is not resolving an issue. I'm starting to get the idea that you might not vote for me Matt.

Open meeting? How silly of you. You might want to have a peek at Michigan's Open Meeting Act (OMA) and ask yourself if these "meetings" at the golf course violate the act. If you think they do, file a complaint.
I have a hard time seeing how the public can possibly attend and comment when the meeting is restricted to one hour in total.

I'm not voting for any one Mr. Erickson, so don't feel spited. I just want to save on my property taxes and squeeze every last bit of waste or abuse out of the budget and employees.
I also pass along my positive ideas to elected officials, not just attack.

Mr. Erickson, endulge me...
A while back an tax paid employee admitted to spending time at a Detroit Tigers game while they were on the clock to taxpayers in a position that pays over 30 dollars an hour..... Would you recommend firing any employees who openly admit to this kind of taxpayer abuse?
A while back a vendor for Shelby Township was caught overbilling hundreds of citizens by thousands of dollars, based on this truth alone, would you reccomend changing vendors or continue to allow them to service Shelby Twp. Citizens in the name of taxpayers?
Hemming and hawing or making excuses gets no respect from me. Those politicians know who they are. I want a "NO" on both counts but very few current and previous political leaders will say this to me.
Tell me "no way" on both counts and I can guarantee you at least 12 votes you would not have received otherwise.

Pure and simple: If after a thorough and proper investigation has been performed and the FACTS indicate beyond a reasonable doubt that an impropriety has occurred, I will swiftly take every remedy available to me to resolve the issue. The key here are the facts. Accusations alone do meet the standard and everyone is innocent until proven guilty. The cheating of township taxpayers is not now and never will be acceptable to me under any set of circusmstances. No one is above the law. Period!

It's quite simple. If after a proper and thorough investigation the facts conclude that beyond a reasonable doubt an impropriety has occured, I will resolve the issue with every remedy available to me. This pertains to anyone who attempts to cheat the residents of Shelby Township. No one is above the law! But keep in mind, the facts MUST be conclusive beyond a reasonable doubt. Accusations alone do not meet the metric.
