Secret Service Called to Examine Fake $100 Bill Passed in Utica
Police warn businesses and customers of counterfeit bleached cash.
The Utica police have called the Secret Service to examine a fake $100 bill that was passed at Taco Bell on Schoenherr Road last week.
Police were called to the fast food chain Monday after the manager noticed that an employee had accepted the counterfeit bill for a small food purchase on Dec. 1.
Police said in a report that the bill was actually a $5 dollar bill because when held up to the light, a Lincoln Hologram could be seen, rather than Benjamin Franklin, which is on the $100 bill. Also, a closer look revealed a $5 mark in the strip.
According to the Better Business Bureau, counterfeiters use a technique that involves bleaching legitimate money and altering it to look like $100 notes.
There are no suspects in the case at this time.

Wow! It amazes me. But why did a Taco Bell not check the bill. I thought all stores checked money over $20. Unless he saw a strip and looked no further. But isn't there a pen you can wipe over them to tell also? I thought the threads were different in each denomination. Tells you what I know. But I don't handle money for a living either.
