Updated: 5 Arrested and Drugs Seized in Shelby Township K2 Crackdown

Cases of K2 found in a Sterling Heights warehouse.

Police and federal agents raided two businesses in Shelby Township suspected of selling K2 Wednesday morning and arrested five people, confiscated loads of the synthetic drug and forfeited thousands of dollars and several vehicles.

At about 6 a.m., police and Drug Enforcement Agency officers executed search warrants at the Citgo Gas Station on Van Dyke Avenue and 21 Mile Road and at Woodstock Tobacco, which is in the adjoining plaza.

Meanwhile, officers also searched the homes of the business owners in West Bloomfield and Sterling Heights.

K2, also known as Spice, which is an herbal incense or bath salt and contains synthetic marijuana, was found at the two businesses. Large quantities also were discovered at a storage unit in Sterling Heights.

Several vehicles and $20,000 in cash were taken from the homes and businesses in connection with the raid.

Although the substance was banned in Michigan on July 9, Police Chief Roland Woelkers said the gas station and the smoke shop, which is owned by relatives, continued to sell the drug.

The business owners and several of their employees were arrested Wednesday and remain locked up at the Shelby Township Police Department. Their names are not being released pending arraignment.

Woelkers said the exact charges are not known, but those arrested face felonies and could be looking at five to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

The investigation continues as Shelby works with federal agents to track down the K2 supplier. Woelkers said the synthetic drug usually comes from overseas and is hidden in warehouses around America.

Business Owners Targeted For Selling K2 Before It Was Illegal

This is not the first time the owners of the Citgo Gas Station and Woodstock Tobacco have been in hot water over the sale of K2.

“It was a kind of in-your-face thing,” Woelkers said. “They were quiet for a long time and then started again.”

In June, before K2 was outlawed, the community mobilized and held a rally at the businesses to put pressure on the owners to stop selling the drug in the community – after they had publically refused to pull it from their shelves. At the rally, the businesses owners vowed to stop selling the drug and to create a foundation that would educate the public about the dangers of the drugs, which can mimic highs from cocaine, marijuana and LSD.

A few weeks after the rally, Shelby Township and Macomb County passed ordinances banning the sale of K2 in the township and county. The following month, Gov. Rick Snyder signed a series of laws that outlawed the sale of K2, and any variation of the substance in the state.

However, police continued to receive multiple reports that K2 was still being sold at the gas station and smoke shop, especially to underage adults.

“There have been a lot of calls from concerned citizens about activities going on at the some shop and gas station and as you all know it takes a lot of investigation to finally get a search warrant,” Woelkers said.

Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the township will continue to aggressively investigate reports of K2 being sold in local businesses.

“If anyone sells K2 or a substance like K2, we’re coming after you and we’re going to get you,” he said.

Citgo Gas Station officials released a statement denouncing the sale of K2, stating it was prohibited under the marketer-franchise agreement.

“Should the sales of these substances at CITGO-branded locations occur, CITGO may take such action as it deems appropriate to protect its brand image, including debranding the location," the statement said.

The owners of these businesses displayed to the public, during interviews, their disrespect to/ for the News Reporters, the City, and the Police. They appeared, to me, to have a strong sense of being above the law and sense of entitlement.
After that I quit patronizing their gas station
I'm not at all surprised by today's events.

I am very grateful that they got them! At the rally they said they would help the citizens of Shelby Twp. They also said that they were not aware that kids/people were smoking the substance. Well the state, county and township banned it and you still sold it. These people didn't care. Money hungry! And very ignorant. Oh and I remember one of the workers/owners said that they had kids of their own. Terrible! I hope they never get another business again and are locked up for a long time!!

I think ALL of this is dumb!!! everyone wants someone to blame and that is what had fueled all of this!!! ITS YOUR KIDS BUYING IT! what type of parent does that make u? you can't control what your kids do, so you want someone else to be punished! if you think these guys should go to prison so should every single one of your kids that bought it!! but u dont want your innocent child to get punished! if your kids weren't using your money to buy it, they wouldnt have any reason to sell it! with all the investigation they have done they know who purchased it from them and everyone should be sitting on a cell next to them! if u want to blame someone so bad, maybe u should take a good look in the mirror!! stop blaming other people for your failure & as a parent!

Reality --- you sound a bit cranky. Did someone take away your K2 supplier??

I agree that parents should know what their kids are up to at all times. But maybe there needs to be concern about what OTHER kids high on K2 will do to her kids or someone else's kids.

I completely agree with you on this! & all of the people that work there are good guys! I'm not going to speculate on the sale of the synthetic substances out of citgo since the papers are covering that part for us, but its basic supply and demand here. So many of these parents children and I'm sure even some of the parents as well were buying the banned substances on a regular basis that I do not look at the employees there out to be the bad guys! *EVERYBODY INVOLVED* including whoever was buying it is just as much at fault / in the wrong here.

Don’t deflect blame from these business owners by accusing parents of “bad parenting” (we all know it’s possible to do things behind our parents’ backs, without their knowledge or consent). No matter who’s creating the “demand” for K2, the bottom line is that the business owners are responsible for their own choices & actions (to continue supplying the demand after it became illegal to do so). They know K2 is bad – the “litmus test” is: “Do they let their own children use it?” I’ll bet the answer is “NO!”
These people are greedy parasites who tried to make extra money (above and beyond what their “normal” business products bring in) off the bad habits (and at the expense) of others. They are criminal drug dealers, no matter how “harmless” K2 may or may not be – because it’s now against the law to possess, use or sell K2. No one else can be blamed for their decision (conscious choice) to continue to sell something that became illegal to sell.

#1 these substances are ILLEGAL, #2 these sellers know they're illegal, #3 the sellers get wealthy in selling illegal unknown substances, #4 these illegal unknown substances have risky health consequences, #5 these sellers usually sell these substances to dumb teenagers who are going to get even more dumb taking the stuff, #6 these sellers care about THEIR POCKETBOOK and finally, did I say these unknown drug substances are ILLEGAL?!

your obviously clueless when it comes to these synthetic drugs! there banned because CRAZY people blamed their outrageous actions like murder and hard crimes on it so they had a crutch when it came to their punishments for being (sorry to say) plain stupid people! its not these substance that are ruining our cities its the choices all of these individuals are making, bad parenting is easily shown when they lash out on the sellers of the producy instead of being parents and doing something about their children personally

Now that this supplier is gone, one of YOUR kids is going to order a bunch online and distribute it to their classmates. They'll probably have the package over-nighted to a fictitious name at a safe address. Maybe they'll schedule the delivery for when your out of town. These kids will make a lot of money for someone their age. The question is, where do their clients get the money? From you?

They were not arrested for not properly raising the kids of the community, they were not arrested for getting kids addicted to this stuff..they were arrested for breaking the law.

yes it was illegal, but parents also got to teach their children what to buy that is illegal or not. Illegal or not there are many cleaning solution that children now a days are doing to get high. Or the chocking thing, that is just dumb.

Teach them the consequences of buying or selling illegal stuff. If you notice something wrong don't wait for it to become worst, take responsibility right then and there. A problem like this has to do with everything. True good parents may have good or bad kids, bad parents may also have good or bad kids.

But you got to be responsible for your own children. Children will be children some smarter than others, some more clever than others. Doesn't matter, take care of your own children and stop complaining or crying. blah blah blah its all nonsense.
If you cant help your won child than get help. Ask people around you community, since community is so close. If children don't learn, then obviously there will be consequences.

I hear Citgo was the king of snythetic drugs including super odor traps was the "new" thing yeah im sure kids nowadays will try anything to get high its theyre decision and whether or not your a good parent has little impact on theyre decisions its the influence of their peers. But I agree all substances that have no research on long term effects should be made illegal lessening the potential of uneducated kids to make a dangerous decision like that.

The owner of this business has shown over and over his blatant disregard for the law here in Shelby Township. Illegal activities that also threaten the children of the community should be shut down permanently however these dealers will most likely plea down to a lesser charge and be back doing the same thing in a short time. Some people just seem to know how to manipulate the law. I hope this isn’t true in this case.

Curtis,

You spelled the owners names wrong. We are fully aware that the stores are independently owned and operated.

The community will no longer sit back and let them destroy any more life's and families. Enough damage has been done. The substance was outlawed for a reason. many deaths have occurred and many people are now brain dead ore using this stuff. I have met many families that suffered losses over the sale of this very unstable drug. Would you like to go one day to the grave yard and see some of the young kids that lost their life from using this stuff. Or would you like to visit the boys in prison that killed their father while high on this stuff. Better yet would you like to wipe a 20 year old person butt because he can no longer think for himself. I am sure all of the people I am talking about thought the same thing it will not harm me. In fact we never know what the next toke will do. I also forgot to mention the young guy who has to live on an oxygen machine because this stuff destroyed his lungs.

You and your friends may have been lucky thus far trust me it may be the next time you smoke the stuff it could alter your life forever.

Mich made a law that K2 is illegal, period. These business owners (BOs) acknowledged their awareness of it via public declaration that they stopped selling K2 – then turned around and blatantly defied that law, exhibiting the “bold-faced LYING” (with no conscience) and “delusions of grandeur” so characteristic of true self-centered, self-righteous narcissists (“I’m superior to everyone else” – so “laws/rules don’t apply to me”). By doing so, they also committed the offense of “Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors” (now they can be held “criminally responsible” for it). “Trust” is a word that means nothing to them - they LIED right to the faces of the community they serve (they obviously had no intention, whatsoever, of discontinuing their sales of KS), and don’t deserve the opportunity to do business there, anymore.

These people selling K2 are the ones who are poor excuses for parents, as their message to their kids is obviously: 1) making MONEY (having as much of it as possible, preferably more than you really need) is the supreme objective in life; therefore, 2) laws & rules of society don’t pertain to us (we’ll only “suffer the consequences” IF we get caught); and 3) we, as individuals, have no responsibility – moral or otherwise – to care about our fellow citizens or be concerned for their well-being – even if they happen to be the most “vulnerable” and “impressionable” among us.

You try and teach your kid with morals, and good judgement. But sometimes peer pressure takes over. The cops gave the Babish family enough rope, they thought it was a game, they hung themselves. What's with the spelling anyway, use spell checker automatic. You must be a requent customer.

At the end of the day we must all look out for each other. We need to restore some values in the community. It is a struggle every day the last thing we need to do is destroy our youth and our communities. The difference between A B and Citgo is that once Ab relized the dangers they quit selling the stuff.

Many families went into both stores and asked the owners to please stop selling the substance. Ab respected the wishes of the parents and stopped. The other store becam violent and threaten the parents and tossed them out of the store.

A young kid in junior high school is not capable of making the right decisions all of the time. Most of the our trying to find themselves and when a drug is being sold as a legal drug most of them don't realize the dangers associated with the synthetic drug. Tell me if the young lady that trained her whole life for the Olympics realized that it only took one time for her to get hooked to the substance do you think she would have thrown a lifetime of hardwork away for synthetic drugs. The young lady I am talking about lost her dream to compete in the Summer Olympics she was all set to go this summer.

Or tell me did the young man who slit his throat realized the dangers associated with smoking K2.

If one of the kids that are high on the stuff gets into and accident with somebody you care about and hurts them or kills them would you forgive them?

We just need to work together in protecting our communities and our youth.

I think before you type your rude letters you smoke the stuff from Citgo (you did respond at 2:39 pm, which makes me wonder if you work?). You don't get it, the stuff is synthetic (sin-thet-ic). That means man-made, not real, God knows what's put in it. It's killed people. Citgo had their chance. They lied to everyone, even on camera. You better make sure you didn't slander A&B, and you have proof of that accusation. A&B could sue you and you'll lose your beater and still have to live in your mom's basement. The store owners need to start caring about our community. Kids are stealing from the their families to support the habits. Kids are destroying their futures by using the substance. Why should a store have the right to sell this substance to a kid? The new formula is just as bad as the previous stuff. If the sellers agree to accept all lability for the health risk associated with somebody smoking the stuff then they should be allowed to sell the stuff. The tobacco manufactures had to pay billions out for the health problems they caused. If a bar serves too much liqueur to a customer and they get into an accident then they are responsible.

Would the seller allow his own family to smoke the synthetic drugs?

Bottom line. It is now illegal to sell it in Shelby Twp. and other towns, as it has been illegal to sell booze/beer to underage kids and young adults. Citgo broke the law. Actually they were quite stupid in selling it again, at least this quick. Should have thought they would be watched, along with other retailers. They cried in front of the TV camera's that they would be upstanding citizens and stop selling the stuff, and this is before it became illegal. If found guilty, take away their store as a dealer would lose their possesions, sell the station to an upstanding American. Believe me-the government is building a case against them just like Kwame. Everyone involved should also write Citgo that you no longer want a drugdealing gas station in your fine city, and push Stathekis about it too.

I think jaded, nick, reality, top commenter and ella8 are the same person. No commen sense in these writers, all the letters focused on bad parenting. Oh include curtis. There isnt no one that is that stupid to write a letter in the fashion he does. The writers are probably the dabishs themselves, or some other dysfunctional family member.

Macomb Rocker..........I have to agree with you, but from other posts, on different subjects, I'd say you were off base big time. With that behind us, These guys need to hit bottom and do jail time

Mike,
I agree with you, not about being off base, we need to keep this community clean and starting with them is a step forward. Jail time, then deportation! Mike, have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! To all, may this be the best Christmas yet, and may they get better from here on out, and the same for the New Year! MR

If you want to comment on the "well being" of the community then don't start with two small places, many people sell things that are way worse then k2 and these two made there money to keep living out of this synthetic drug, why make it legal to begin with? Drugs like marijuana cocaine and many other drugs are in shelby twp, but they target the only two people that first came to mind, my point is the well being of th community will not end by putting these people behind bars because there are a lot more things dangerous out there

The court would like to hear from the community in regards to this upcoming case. Should a plea bargain be offered and should the just receive a slap on the hand? Or should they be prosecuted and fined the maximum.

A community meeting will be hosted on March 04,2013 at 7:00 in Shelby Township to discuss the problems with the new synthetic drugs being sold in our community. We are planning to organize a protest/rally to bring attention to the new synthetic drugs being sold in Shelby Township.

Citgo and Woodstock tabacco shouldnt be held responsable for kids actions. It should be the parents completely. These shops are businesses and they get orders to sell what they have it isnt there fault that kids decide to go smoke an incense. It wasnt sold to smoke it was sold as an aroma therapy the packages even say not for human consumption in bold so dont blame the places that sold it cause you can get it anywhere else but woodstock and citgo. It wasnt a synthetic drug.
