Shelby Township Family Building 'Team' to Fight Brain Tumors

Second Annual Team Mathes 5-K Run and 1-Mile Fun Walk set for June 16.

A Shelby Township woman has recruited a small army to join Team Mathes and fight for a cure for cancer.

When Sue learned her husband, Thom, had been diagnosed with three brain tumors in 2011, she took charge of their future the only way she knew how: by organizing a race.

“The pity party was relatively short. We kicked into do-something-about-it gear pretty quickly," said Sue Mathes.

June 16 will mark the 2nd Annual Team Mathes 5k and 1 Mile Fun Walk at Stony Creek. The race will begin at 9 a.m. with the 1-mile walk and the 5K run at 9:30 a.m.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the American Brain Tumor Association. Last year’s Team Mathes raised more than $6,000 for the ABTA.

Since the initial diagnosis, Thom, 63, has endured a 7 hour surgery, followed by 6-weeks of intense radiation and chemotherapy, and has since completed 6 additional rounds of chemo.

"Family has always been the most important thing," said Sue Mathes. "It’s never been a question of sticking together through this.”

Register by June 10 to guarantee an event T-shirt and join Team Mathes on the wooded trails and rolling hills of Stony Creek Metropark. Visit www.teammathes.com to learn more and register.
