Shelby Township Firefighters Injured in Crash While Responding to Emergency
The collision with a pickup truck occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads.
An ambulance on an emergency run was involved in an accident Sunday in Shelby Township.
Two Shelby Township firefighters were hurt in the crash with a pickup truck at approximately 2 p.m. at the intersection of 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads, according to clickondetroit.com.
They, along with the truck driver, were transported to a hospital, but their conditions were not immediately known, police told the Detroit Free Press.
The accident occurred while the ambulance was responding to a 911 call, WDIV reported.
"The ambulance was responding to a call for service at the time of the crash." There were no patients on board," Shelby Township Police Lt. Michael Coady told the Free Press.
The accident remains under investigation.
"I was turning into my sub at around 5:15 p.m. and they were still on the scene," reader Debbie Droz posted on Patch's Facebook page. "I have seen way too many near accidents because people are not paying attention and not giving the right of way to emergency vehicles."
Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call police at 586-731-2121.

The other day I was at 22 Mile and Schoenherr as fire trucks were trying to turn north on Schoenherr from east bound 22 Mile. At least 15 cars past all of us stopped in the right lanes to go through the green light. The last car just missed being hit. People!!! Turn down the radio, and put down your phones, and pay attention! When you see cars stopping at a green light there is probably a reason.

Hopefully the firefighters will be ok. I've always wondered though...they've installed these so-called "intelligent" lights that are "supposed" to gauge traffic flow & adjust accordingly. Why can't these lights also adjust to emergency vehicles coming to an intersection. Surely there must be some way to have all sides turn to red when an emergency vehicle approaches?

That's a good idea macombresident. I've seen people not pull aside for ambulances many times. I think this society is about "me" and to hell with anyone else. What happen to the old days when cop cars used to lead or follw ambulances? Man, if I was Chief of police here, I could save and make Shelby Twp. $$$$. Instead of doing patrols, have the cars sitting (save gas money, and cop car milage) at corners hidden, like 23 & Schoenherr, 23 & VD, 26 & VD. Everyday I see cars running obvious red lights that are about 2-3 seconds turned, these are the new delayed lights. Tons of tickets can be made at these intersections (make revenue). every couple of hours go to another intersection and lie low.

I'd like to think (hope) that people aren't pulling aside simply because they're not hearing the sirens and not due to a conscious choice to say the hell with it. Cars today seem to be much quieter, have more soundproofing, than years ago...for that "quiet ride" we've seen on the commercials. That has a downside, namely people don't hear the sirens.
