Shelby Township Police Officers Association Responds to Statements Made by Supervisor
The Shelby Township Police Officers Association has asked Patch to publish a letter written to residents.
August 1, 2012
To the Residents of Shelby Township,
An open letter from your Shelby Township Police Officers Association (STPOA):
Recently the Shelby Township Supervisor has made false/incorrect statements in a Township Board meeting and in literature he mailed to your residence. These false/incorrect statements, by the Supervisor, are regarding our Association’s unwillingness to negotiate a new contract.
The STPOA would like to clear up these false statements and give the residents what they’ve deserved more than anything these past four years.....the truth.
The Shelby Township Supervisor states in literature: “One of our police unions is waiting until after the election to resume pension negotiations.”
FACT: The STPOA is currently under contract with the Township until 12/31/2012. The Township asked to open up the contract in March for an extension of the current contract. A contract was offered to the STPOA by the current Supervisor. The proposal failed to address the pension deficit or offer any solutions to the current deficit. The union counter offered the proposal within a few weeks of the original offer. Our counter offer had solutions for the current deficit.
As of August 1, 2012, the Patrol union has not received a response from the Supervisor.
FACT: Only one current female Township Board member has met with the current Shelby Township Fire & Police Pension Board to discuss future funding & benefits. ONLY ONE MEMBER IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS ATTEMPTED TO ADDRESS THE PENSION DEFEICT.
The Supervisor also claimed police employees contribute only $30,000 into the pension system.
FACT: Contributions from a police officer are more than $100,000.00 before earning any interest on their investment. This far exceeds what your Shelby Township Supervisor wants you to believe.
Now is not the time to make false statements about important issues that Shelby Township faces. We only ask the truth be told. Honesty should be expected from the office of the Supervisor.
The Shelby Township Police Officers Association proudly serves the citizens and businesses of Shelby Township. We are proud to serve and will continue to do so with Honesty and Integrity.
Sincerely,
The Shelby Township Police Officers Association

It is nice to see the Shelby Twp Police standing up for what they believe in. It is hard to believe anything the Supervisor Stathakis says. Hopefully the citizens won't be dupped by him and re-elect him.

I hope that there won’t be repercussions from now until November.

I am thinking: Raise the minimum retirement age to between 55 and 59 years old and raise it 1 year per three years over the next 18 years after that.
Cap the taxpayers contribution for medical to 5 years after retirement so the retiree can get medicare at 62 or 65 years old, then phase medical coverage out completely.
Also, cap benefits, for those currently receiving a monthly taxpayer funded, defined amount to 20 times their contribution and when this limit is reached they are cut off completely.from a define pension to whatever they have saved seperately.
I believe if the officers association really cared about taxpayers they would make their offer public and let taxpayers have a say in their benefits. This current letter attacking the current board, without member names, or mention of what they think is reasonable. Whomever wrote this letter obviously holds the current supervisor and taxpayers in contempt and fears the election.
The officers association would only endorse candidates who would guarantee no pension concessions for them at the expense of taxpayers wallets.
Can the person who wrote this letter please tell us, the taxpayers of Shelby Township who YOU would like in office so we can be sure WHO not to vote for if we want our taxes kept low and out township out of bankruptcy?

OH MY WORD!! Mr. Guarnieri do you have a job?? I seriously think you have way too much time on your hands. If you put 1/2 your time spewing hate and judgement into serving the less fortunate, you would seriously be a much happier person.

It's against the law for them to make their offer public. They can't disclose details of ongoing negotiations.

Matt i really dont think the individual who wrote this letter fears this election. Stathakis has done a wonderful job tarnishing his name amongst shelby residents and you really are the exception as far as being a Stathakis supporter.

What was included in the Union offer to reduce the cost of the FUTURE pension burden on the taxpayers?

This is why I support unions 100% ! The worker has to fear people like Matt for a fair wage and safe working enviorment. Why is Matt such a bitter person?
