Utica Community Schools Passes Anti-Bullying Policy
Utica Community Schools passed an anti-bullying policy that is more in line with the state's new laws on school bullying.
The Utica Community Schools Board of Education approved a new anti-bullying policy Monday evening that will go into effect by the beginning of the next school year.
The new policy is aligned with an anti-bullying bill that was signed into law last December by Governor Rick Snyder.
“This legislation sends a clear message that bullying is wrong in all its forms and will not be tolerated,” Snyder said in a news release. “No child should feel intimidated or afraid to come to school.”
All Michigan school districts have six months from the time the bill was signed into law to develop their anti-bullying policy.
UCS' policy states that after an investigation into allegations of bullying, the victim and the offender's parents would be notified of the incident and recorded in a discipline log.
UCS' policy is consistent with the new state laws and includes the following provisions:
- "A statement prohibiting bullying of a pupil.
- A statement prohibiting retaliation or false accusation against a target of bullying, a witness, or another person with reliable information about an act of bullying.
- A provision indicating that all pupils are protected under the policy and that bullying is equally prohibited without regard to its subject matter or motivating animus.
- The identification by job title of school officials responsible for ensuring that the policy is implemented.
- A statement describing how the policy is to be publicized.
- A procedure for providing notification to the parent or legal guardian of a victim of bullying and the parent or legal guardian of a perpetrator of the bullying.
- A procedure for reporting an act of bullying.
- A procedure for prompt investigation of a report of violation of the policy or a related complaint, identifying either the principal or the principal’s designee as the person responsible for the investigation.
- A procedure for each public school to document any prohibited incident that is reported and a procedure to report all verified incidents of bullying and the resulting consequences, including discipline and referrals, to the board of the school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of the public school academy on an annual basis."
- A requirement for educational programs for pupils and parents on preventing, identifying, responding to, and reporting incidents of bullying and cyberbullying."
- A requirement for annual training for administrators, school employees, and volunteers who have significant contact with pupils on preventing, identifying, responding to, and reporting incidents of bullying.
A copy of UCS' anti-bullying policy will be published in the 2012-2013 parent handbook and on the website.

Has your child ever been bullied at school? What did you do to try and stop it?

Shelby Township Clerk Stanley Grot is a bully.
Mr. Grot has invited children to attend the township meetings to learn about local government. The way that Grot bully's citizens at these meetings certainly wouldn't set an anti-bullying example for young people. Grot should be setting a good example instead of being the bully himself. Parents need to protect their children from the likes of people like Clerk Grot.

Grot is indeed a bully. Just google his name and you'll see how he tore the local Republican party a part. You'll also see a lawsuit against him by a woman that claimed some not so nice things... Grot was so successful as a restauranteur that he went to work for one of the Big 3 for 10 years. He is one of the few 60 year old men who hasn't held down a career for more than 10 years.

Grot was very happy to accept the clerk position because nobody else wanted him around anymore. Nobody likes a bully in any capacity!
Kids today need to see very positive role models who live by the rules of ethics, morales and the Golden Rule.

I have a child in a utica school. SHe has been a target of bullies since day one of this year. It was on facebook mostly they were smart enough not to say anything in school. I had a police report made and brought it to the school, there I was informed that unless it was brought into the school not to much they could do about. The asst was very kind and read over all what was said and told me that he wuld keep an eye out for it. Well I am at the same point my daughter has been getting harrassed on facebook again. The kids have blocked her but some good friends have printed out everything that was said. Now she had kids coming up to her in school saying that this group thind she should "drink some bleach" "end it no one likes you". WOW right? I have blocked these people and yet the find ways to send snap chat photos of hate words and Im not really sure what to do at this point. I am so tired of the harrassment and wish this kids would just stop. I am not a mean person but when i see how hurt my daughter is, it hurts me deeply also. I would love any info or help on how I can STOP this ! thank you C. Sterling Heights
