Patch.com cameras rolled as a fight broke out between political blogger Matt Guarnieri, candidate for Treasurer Lisa Manzella (in red), her husband, Joe, and Jean Leman (in blue) the wife of candidate for supervisor, Bob Leman.

An altercation between a Township candidate, her husband, the wife of another candidate and a local blogger broke out Tuesday afternoon in front of precincts 23 and 24 in Shelby Township.

The scuffle was among candidate for treasurer and current Trustee Lisa Manzella, her husband Joe Manzella, Jean Leman (the wife of supervisor candidate Bob Leman), and Shelby Township political blogger Matt Guarnieri.

Guarnieri parked his truck in front of the polling locations Tuesday afternoon at Crissman Elementary School off of 24 Mile Road. Guarnieri was painting over political signs for Leman and Manzella near the school when he was approached by Jean Leman, who was campaigning on behalf of her husband a few hundred feet away. Just seconds later, Manzella, who also was campaigning nearby, walked up, and her husband, who was in a campaign vehicle, approached Guarnieri.

A skirmish broke out between the campaigners and Guarnieri, and police arrived just minutes later.

No arrests were made at the scene and no serious injuries were reported. Shelby Township police took reports at the scene and said the incident remains under police investigation.

According to Matt, he acquired the signs legally. He even checked with the Township before taking them from the garbage. After de-designing them, signed them and included his contact info.

Apparently, Leman and Manzella believe that they had the right to assault him for this. They also seem to think it is ok to take his property, kick his can of paint on the lawn and cause a scene using profanity and threats in public.

The lady in blue put her hands on the fat guy in green first, then the guy in blue put his hands on the fat guy in green, then the lady in red put her hands on the fat guy in green. No matter how you feel about something like this, it is law enforcement or security personnel ONLY that have the right unless this guy posed a threat to life or property and he was put under citizens arrest. This was not done, and the law clearly states that you cannot put your hands on another. Verbal is labeled assault, Battery is the touch. All three are guilty of this and it is a crime. Now lets see if they are an exception to the law, or by connection, above it!!!

Unless you have a surefire connection between Stathakis and Matt, saying that Stathakis is connected to him or Matt is a representation of what he stands for is uncalled for. Every candidate (local to national) has less than stellar followers/supporters...it's unfortunate that Matt decided to act in this way, but to automatically connect him to Stathakis just because he supports him is unfair--again, unless you have some sort of evidence of that...

I, of course, do not condone Matt's actions at all.

Repugnant actions to be sure, on both sides, but who says he stole the signs? Don't campaigns give those things away to anyone who wants them? The blogger was being intentionally provacative and should expect this sort of thing, the candidates should be above this, and either ignored him or called the appropriate authorities. I suspect no one will face charges, I'm not sure the blogger did anything illegal, the candidates (and their spouses) are clearly guilty of assault, and possibly battery, but I doubt they will be charged either... They're "plugged in" to the system, and I doubt the blogger will want further embarassment by pressing charges.

Now that I've "seen" Matt in action, it speaks volumes! He was defaming and stealing property which is against the law. He has been needling and belittling those candidates for months and it all came to a head. I personally think the women and that man in the white truck showed great restraint after all this man has done to them. I think anyone that has someone defaming and slandering you over and over for a year or more, daily, non-stop is more than anyone should have to bear.

Real "mature" actions by these public servants. Yes defacing their campaign signs was def wrong. But that does not give these politicians and their spouses the right to assault him.
Seems these officals are so used to abusing their power they feel they are above law and can assault anyone they think wronged them. Makes me sick. Nice example they set for their public. If you feel someone has wronged you it's okay to grab some people and bully that 1 person. Well if you're an offical it's okay. Apparently you have no laws to follow.

Matt owned the signs, re-designed them and posted them on an easment within his own property. Leman's wife, Mr. and Ms. Manzella assualted him for this and took his property. They should of been arrested!

Sad, Sad, Sad.... There is no right on this one. If Matt wants to voice his opinion like a man then he should do it with his voice at meetings or run for a elected position. What he did was childish and should not be condoned by anyone. As for getting in Matts face and swearing at him, I disagree with that too. The best action would have been to just record it and make a police report. However, if Matt acted like a responsible adult then none of this would have happened. Everyone has two choices to every decision they make.

People if you really care about Shelby Twp then stand up and make a difference for the positive. I read an article that was comparing Shelby Twp to Warren. It stated that Shelby was headed in that direction. To be honest it is. Everyone is so worried about who is getting into office instead of worrying what they can do themselves to make a positive difference. Our society is so backwards. We care more if a person is a democrat or republican then we care if they are actually the right person to run the city. We care more about whether taxes are going up or down then we care about the health and beauty of the city. Look around people, vacant lots, vandalism, trash throughout, neighborhoods that are not being maintained. Look at the crime rate in Shelby over the last 10 years, something else that has been heading in the wrong direction.

Shelby is a beautiful area and it needs to remain that way, but if you think our current supervisor or anyone else in the elected official role is going to guide Shelby into the right direction, think again. It takes a community to come together and do the little things.

Our current supervisor is so proud of the fact that he does not raise taxes. Do you know that taxes help a city grow. It helps keep cities safe and clean. Look at any elected official and answer me this, how many are truly for the people????????

Please speak for yourself. I am not democrat or republican and vote accordingly. I care very much who represents our township in public office. They are the ones that ultimately make the decisions that effect our township the most. Mr. Stathakis should be extremely proud of a job well done. The current board has been able to balance the budget with surplus whilst not raising our taxes to do so.

The old board would of preferred to waste your hard earned money for the benefit of special interests whilst not holding anyone accountable. Then they would of had to raise your taxes to pay for their lack of leadership.

Also note, that I currently pay hundreds per year more than I should in property taxes. Whilst my property has decreased in value the township's assessor has raised the SEV to un-cap the taxable value each year. My house has recently appraised at 40k less than the value for which I am charged property tax.

We need more people like Matt who care enough to make a difference. We also need more people that actually take the time to research what effects us most. People who understand it and care enough to do something about it.

Bill, if you feel so strong in support of Matt and what he does, then why not have Matt run for a spot on the board. Then two things can happen, Matt can voice his opinion like a real man instead of like a coward and you can then stand behind him and support his ideas instead of his actions........ Bill, are you guided by society and the media or are guided by life and the good that is in it? I hope the man painting and stealing the political signs is charged with Disorderly Conduct or Larceny AND Malicious Destruction of Property. It's apparent he's another one of our "stop watch" supervisor supporters. For those of you bashing the campaign affiliates and candidits, the signs were purchased with their campaign money, which makes them their private property. Despite the fact they are placed throughout the township for public influence, there is no justifiable excuse for driving around with a truck full of political signs with the intent to deface them! He is a pathetic and worthless citizen and should move out of our township if he is so distraught! His news interview was great, I laughed at this clown the whole time! Between his lisp and the news misreporting facts, such as Lisa running for clerk ... It was some all around great entertainment!

This person is indeed distraught and has serious issues to deal with. It's a shame that our democratic process can't just take its normal course and let the voters decide on candidates based on the issues rather than be influenced by contrived silliness like this turned out to be. According to Matt, he retrieved them from the trash, which is nobody's property at that point. Until proven otherwise, have to assume he had legal possession. As for defacing, if he were charged, then the other three would be charges with Disorderly Conduct, Harassment, Assault, Battery, Reckless Endangerment with a Motor Vehicle, Disturbing the Peace, Mayhem, Theft, and I'm sure a few more I'm missing. May not like his methods (I'm not condoning), but the resultant fiasco was nothing short of riotous behavior by the other three. And FTR, it's CANDIDATES.

This was not staged, this is just a sad symptom of the current state of American politics. If we can learn to fight words with words, we can all benefit. Matt could say whatever he wanted on his blog or signs, and so could the candidates, and then the voters could decide who's worth listening to and who's being an idiot... In this case, every person in this video is an idiot, unworthy of an audience.

I will end this rant with an apology to the residents of Shelby Township. I am so very sorry that you the voters, can tolerate hidden agendas, bribes, dishonest politics, total corruption, and politicians who don't listen to the residents. I'm sure they will continue to laugh in your face. We all should have been walking around town saying, "thanks for coming down, your time is up." Instead, these Detroit like politicians just got the go ahead to drive this township into the ground. In fact, I'm sure Rick has already made a trip to Walmart to replace his worn out stop watch!

Wow! I can't believe Matt hasn't piped up. I wouldn't have described any of what happened in the video as a "brawl". Looked like 4 people daring each other for a reason to sue each other.

Bottom line we need "Change" and no sign is going to do that. I don't hide my name behind anyone that talks "S***" At least someone has the balls to stand for what they believe in. So when you lose the rest of your rights, because you need to pull off your diaper and pull out the pacifier. I love my Country but our Government has to go, we have allowed it to get way to big. Because ignorant people can't think for themselves.

All four of them acted like a bunch of idiots...I was going to say children but even kids aren't this childish. The guy who spray painted the signs could surely have found a more productive way in which to get his message across & the other three should have just taped it & turned it over to the police rather than confronting him...stupid stupid stupid all the way around

As I stated on an earlier site, the "F" word in front of the kids and the acting out is not an example for our young children or an example for our up and coming young voters. We all complain about how the younger generation act. The disrespect they show to us as well as their rage on the roads. Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Please people, grow up and be a good example. Lets instill courtesy back into our society. It seems that adults are getting more an more angry and displaying this in public. We are in hard times. All of us are but, this is not the way to show our kids how to handle confrontations or difference of opinions. Putting ones hands on another, using profanity under any circumstance, is unacceptable. What happened to days of respecting one another and allowing all to have an opinion with out judgement? Just be nice...

Unions in Michigan are now canvassing citizens for signatures to give Unions extraordinary powers in the state related to collective bargaining and forced Union dues. Be very careful on what you sign.

Mr. Manzella should have dropped Matt. If anyone grasped my wife like that, it would have been a crime scene. She was wrong for taking the defaced signs off his land, but when a man grabs a woman like that, wife or not, I would still bust his chops. They all have to grow up....

I reviewed the video again... did not see Matt grabbing anyone... but DID see both Lisa and Joe put their hands on him... easy to see who were the aggressors. They should thank him for not filing charges and tarnishing their images. Pitiful.
