Nathan Oke, 4th grade student at Monfort Elementary, was honored during a special pre-game ceremony before the Tigers game on Friday, April 20, 2012 for his entry in the 16th annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay & Poetry Contest.
Although the contest is open to middle and high school students, Nathan’s art work was so impressive that he received a certificate and a back pack filled with a book and DVD about Jackie Robinson.
Tigers Prince Fielder and Austin Jackson also personally congratulated Nathan on his work.
Students entered the contest by submitting an original essay, poem, or work of art in honor of Jackie Robinson.
The art work submitted by Nathan captured the spirit of Jackie Robinson's nine values of success - Courage, Determination, Teamwork, Persistence, Integrity, Citizenship, Justice, Commitment, and Excellence.
