Recent headlines reminds us again that rape is a worldwide epidemic; “New India Gang Rape: Woman Hanged from Tree after Sexual Assault in Bihar,” “DC fails to investigate sexual assaults,” ”University of Michigan student sexually assaulted in West Quad dorm,” “Teen sent to prison as adult for sexually assaulting former girlfriend.” The headlines and stories go on and on to the point where we no longer react when we hear another rape has occurred. We rationalize that rape and sexual assault are the norm and cannot be prevented. We hope that rape won’t happen to us or someone we love. Or we tell ourselves I am careful and live in a safe area, still clinging to the myth that most rapists are strangers and we would know if we are in danger of being raped. That makes us a nation of bystanders.
