For over a decade, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marineshave put it all on the line to protect the freedom and security of our great country in the Global War on Terrorism. This has been a long and costly fight not just in terms of dollars and cents, but most importantly in terms of the loss of life and disability our Warfighters have suffered. Shelby Township has not been left unscathed in this war. Shelby’s finest have given of themselves in many different ways. From participating in multiple arduous deployments, to suffering serious wounds, to making the ultimate sacrifice; our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers and close friends have served with character, determination, honor, commitment and valor. They are the valiant 1% serving the 99%.
Today’s Warfighters are not members of America’s finest by way of indentured servitude or the draft. They are all volunteers, each and every one. They come from all walks of life and a wide range of cultural roots. They are passionate people who serve others first before thinking of themselves. When they deploy they leave behind them sons, daughters, wives, husbands, moms and dads and go to locations that place themselves in peril.
Whether or not you support the war, we must always demonstrate our unwavering support for our American Heroes. There are many ways you can demonstrate your love and appreciation for these precious few. You can offer prayers for their safe return, send letters of appreciation to them directly, provide items to be sent in care packages, and when you see them shake their hands and thank them for their service. For it is because of their sacrifices that we are able to enjoy the freedom and security we have in America today.
