Who Will Lead Utica in Its 197th Year? Candidates Have 5 Months to Enter the Fray

The office of mayor and three city council seats are up for election this November in the City of Utica.

Leadership is due to shift once again this year in the City of Utica as the office of mayor and three city council seats come up for election in November. Prospective candidates have until 4 p.m. Aug. 13 to file their nomination paperwork with the city clerk, according to the Macomb County Elections Division. As Utica will not have an August primary, all candidates who file for elected office within the city will appear on the November ballot. The Nov. 5 election will see the council seats currently held by Russell Barthelmeh, William Osladil and Kenneth Sikora come up for election, along with that of Mayor Jacqueline K. Noonan. Utica's mayor is elected every two years, while city council members hold four-year terms. The city's clerk and …

Shelby Township Congressman Considers Run for Carl Levin's Senate Seat

Rep. Pete Lund was one of seven candidates named as possible GOP nominees in a recent automated poll of likely Republican primary voters.

Rep. Pete Lund, who represents Shelby Township in the Michigan House, is one of several Republicans reportedly eyeing Democrat Carl Levin's U.S. Senate seat. On March 8, Lund told POLITICO that he would consider a run for the Senate seat that Levin recently announced that he would vacate in 2014. "My preference would be Candice Miller run,” Lund told the website. “Candice is my congressman….she’d be a great senator. But if she doesn’t, I’m not saying I’m going to run but I’m not ruling it out at this point." Miller, who represents Michigan's 10th congressional district, including Shelby Township and Utica, has stated that she does not plan to run for the seat. Lund has served since 2008 as the representative for Michigan's 36th District, …

Letter to the Editor: Shelby Township Clerk Calls for 'No-Reason Absentee Voting'

Shelby Township Clerk is urging Michigan election officials to consider reforming absentee ballot voting for all residents.

By" Shelby Township Clerk Stanley Grot After conducting three major elections in a nine-month span, I had the opportunity to personally witness what works and how we as election officials can improve the voting process to better serve our constituents. The times have changed and many people have limited time to take off work to stand in line for an extended period of time on Election Day.  Because of their busy schedule, many citizens simply forget to vote on Election Day. Currently, there are six reasons listed on an application for an absent voter’s ballot.  In today’s economy, these reasons are not sufficient to meet the busy schedules of the constituents we serve.  The six reasons are as follows: I personally witnessed individuals …

It would be especially nice if people would just stop with the negative comments about others and just let the board do it’s job. Why do you feel it necessary to always be stirring the pot? Get a life. What’s done is done. If the Nightingale Towing Company sues someone that’s their business and the outcome is the decision of a judge or a jury. It’s really that simple.   more ›

Despite Long Lines, Turnout in Shelby and Utica Lower in 2012 Presidential Elections

Just one percent less of voters turned out in Shelby Township and Utica for the 2012 Presidential elections than in 2008.

Despite long lines reported at several of the polls in Shelby Township, voter turnout in Shelby and its neighbor Utica were slightly lower for the 2012 presidential elections than the 2008 elections. In 2008, 72.8 percent of the registered voters in Shelby Township cast their ballots, and on Tuesday, 71 percent turned out. Despite the slightly lower turnout Shelby officials were predicting record number of voters Tuesday. Precinct 23 and 24 Chairperson Judy Rosenthal told Patch Tuesday there were more than 100 people lined up outside the precinct by 6:00 a.m., which was an hour before the polls opened. "It was just remarkable. That means there is (not) a lot of voter apathy," she said. Rosenthal also said the precinct was poised to process…
