The office of mayor and three city council seats are up for election this November in the City of Utica.
Leadership is due to shift once again this year in the City of Utica as the office of mayor and three city council seats come up for election in November. Prospective candidates have until 4 p.m. Aug. 13 to file their nomination paperwork with the city clerk, according to the Macomb County Elections Division. As Utica will not have an August primary, all candidates who file for elected office within the city will appear on the November ballot. The Nov. 5 election will see the council seats currently held by Russell Barthelmeh, William Osladil and Kenneth Sikora come up for election, along with that of Mayor Jacqueline K. Noonan. Rep. Pete Lund, who represents Shelby Township in the Michigan House, is one of several Republicans reportedly eyeing Democrat Carl Levin's U.S. Senate seat. On March 8, Lund told POLITICO that he would consider a run for the Senate seat that Levin recently announced that he would vacate in 2014. "My preference would be Candice Miller run,” Lund told the website. “Candice is my congressman….she’d be a great senator. But if she doesn’t, I’m not saying I’m going to run but I’m not ruling it out at this point." The times have changed and many people have limited time to take off work to stand in line for an extended period of time on Election Day. Because of their busy schedule, many citizens simply forget to vote on Election Day. Currently, there are six reasons listed on an application for an absent voter’s ballot. In Shelby Township, Republicans rule. During the 2012 elections Tuesday, every seat on the Shelby Township Board of Trustees was filled by a Republican, and all incumbents, except for one new trustee. Shelby Township incumbent Supervisor Rick Stathakis will hold the township’s top spot for another four years. Stathakis beat Independent candidate David Erickson for the spot with 20,102 to Erickson's 11,520. "Although I was not elected, my heart was filled with joy for the over 11,500 people who gave me their support and confidence by voting for me," Erickson said in an emial. Just one percent less of voters turned out in Shelby Township and Utica for the 2012 Presidential elections than in 2008.
Despite long lines reported at several of the polls in Shelby Township, voter turnout in Shelby and its neighbor Utica were slightly lower for the 2012 presidential elections than the 2008 elections. In 2008, 72.8 percent of the registered voters in Shelby Township cast their ballots, and on Tuesday, 71 percent turned out. Despite the slightly lower turnout Shelby officials were predicting record number of voters Tuesday. Precinct 23 and 24 Chairperson Judy Rosenthal told Patch Tuesday there were more than 100 people lined up outside the precinct by 6:00 a.m., which was an hour before the polls opened. Incumbent Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis has won re-election, along with an all Republican Board.
Macomb County voters re-elected Democrats Eric J. Smith, Anthony Wickersham, Carmella Sabaugh and Ted B. Wahby as prosecutor, sheriff, clerk and treasurer, respectively, Nov. 6. The Macomb Community College millage proposal failed.
