Milestones in the Shelby Manor Story

Here's a look at how far the Shelby Manor community has come since the Nov. 17 fire.

1. The Aug. 28 grand re‐opening of the Shelby Manor B Building, which was damaged in a fire last year, was a celebration of all things Shelby Township.

Along with celebrating the end of construction, the Township was looking to fill the vacancies that remained after some displaced residents did not return. Within an hour of the ribbon cutting, the complex was at maximum occupancy and by the end of the day there was a waiting list for future vacancies.

2. How did we get to this point? A fire broke out on the second floor of B Building last November, displacing 90 residents from the independent senior complex on Schoenherr Road, just north of Hall Road. The fire was contained to four units in Apartment B, but much of Building B sustained water and smoke damage.

All but two apartments in the 90-unit complex were occupied at the time of the fire.

3. Shelby Township Police Department officers and civilians within the dispatch and communications departments who reported to the scene or helped those who did were honored for acts of heroism.

“They don’t have the equipment and are not trained to go into smoke-filled buildings, so it really speaks a lot of their dedication,” said Shelby Township Police Chief Roland Woelkers. “As far as I am concerned, they are heroes.”

4. Shelby Township Fire Department officials, firefighters and medics who reported to the scene were also honored for their work "in the finest tradition of the fire service," according to Chief James Swinkowski.

5. The community also came together to help, with financial contributions as well as old-fashioned hard work to rebuild Shelby Manor and get residents back home.
