August 2013 – According to Michigan’s Department of Human Services, approximately 14,000 Michigan children are in foster care at any given time. Foster care identifies and places children in safe homes when they cannot remain with their families because of safety concerns. Foster families provide these children with the consistency and support they need to grow. The goal is to return children back to their homes when it is safe. If a return home is not possible, adoptive families are needed. The Kinship Adoption Festival supports these adoptable children each year.

The Adoption Festival is designed to increase community awareness of children in the foster care system waiting to be adopted.  The event features workshops, children’s activities, food, entertainment, and display tables with various adoption agencies’ information.  The festival also educates participants about the adoption of children with special needs, sibling groups, and teen adoption.

Wayne County Community College District’s School of Continuing Education presents the event in partnership with the Tri-County Kinship Coalition and the support of many local agencies including Big Family of Michigan.

Big Family of Michigan is a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of Michigan's foster children and young adults.           The organization supports the Festival each year and offers programs to foster and adoptive parents throughout the year.

Big Family will be hosting an Art Competition for Foster Children at the event.  Children in age groups 4-6, 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18 will be encouraged to create a drawing under the theme: HAPPINESS IS!  Two winners will be chosen in each age group, one boy and one girl.  The winning entries will be featured on holiday and all occassion cards supporting Big Family of Michigan’s promotion of foster children in Michigan.
