Nationally, it is estimated 1 in 20 children will experience the death of a parent by the time he or she graduates high school. Though there are many charities in Michigan that help children in a myriad of circumstances, only Yatooma’s Foundation For The Kids is tailored specifically to assist children who have lost a parent by providing guidance, stability and financial assistance.

Yatooma’s Foundation For The Kids was inspired by the extraordinary hardship endured by Norman Yatooma and his family after the death his father, Manual S. Yatooma, who was tragically murdered 21 years ago in 1993. Overnight his family went from relative financial security to threatened foreclosure, bankruptcy and dependence on social security. Without regular income, the Yatoomas were forced to squeeze out what they could from school loans and side jobs to help keep food in the kitchen.

Norman Yatooma launched this nonprofit organization on Father’s Day 2003, in his father’s name and memory, to assist families working to rebuild their lives after the painful loss of a parent.

The Foundation provides a full spectrum of assistance including grief counseling, support groups, needs-based financial assistance, family budget development, resource referrals, academic success programs, family togetherness experiences, and much more.

Each family’s unique situation is considered and a customized plan for support is developed to ensure that the most vital programs and services are offered.
