Utica Community Schools theatre students earned more than 50 top honors and $470,000 in college scholarships at the 2013 Michigan Thespian Festival.

Students from the district’s four high schools received a combined 27 “Superior” and 28 “Excellent” honors from the professional judges at the festival, held December 6-7 at Saginaw Valley State University.

UCS students also earned $470,000 in scholarship offers from college representatives at the festival. Nearly $3.5 million in scholarships were offered at the largest theatre scholarship competition in the country.

Approximately 900 students from 43 Michigan schools participated in the festival - attending workshops, meeting with college representatives, and performing before judges.

The 133 UCS students at the festival were joined by high school theatre teachers David Springer of Eisenhower High School, Kelly Davis of Henry Ford II High School, Mark Johnson of Stevenson High School and Joel Kaczmarczyk of Utica High School.
