Artists to Take Over Municipal Grounds this Weekend During Township's Annual Art Fair

The popular event is expected to draw thousands to the Van Dyke spot.

Come early August every year, there's one weekend event that brings 10,000 visitors over two days to the Shelby Township Municipal Grounds.

That event could only be the township's Art Fair, and it's back for a 30th round this Saturday and Sunday.

Nearly 80 artists from across Metro Detroit will showcase their work in styles ranging from photography to sculpture in this event put on by the township's Parks & Recreation Department.

But, that's not all.

"We've got great art for people to see, but we also have our Michigan-made products area that started last year, and we've got more vendors from there this year so it's going to be great," said Pam Reinhardt, secretary of the event's committee.

To be exact, over 20 Michigan-based companies and home businesses will have products for sale, giving customers even more incentive to buy local.

Admission and parking for the fair are both free, along with a no-charge shuttle bus from the nearby community center.

A large lineup of entertainment also helps set this art fair apart from others in the area. Acts this year include the Detroit Flyhouse Circus, Wally Fitz Jazz and the DIA Art-Making Workshop. Critters from the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center will also make a special guest appearance.

"It's a great way to get out of the house and not spend a lot of money, and it's just a good family time," added Reinhardt.

The Shelby Township Art Fair will be held at the Shelby Township Municipal Grounds located at 52700 Van Dyke, just south of 24 Mile Road. The event will run Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information, call the Shelby Township Parks and Recreation Department at 586-731-0300.
