Experience a Civil War Encampment

The Shadbush Nature Center is inviting everyone to travel back through time to the 1800s. Living history re-enactor groups “The Sisters of the Union” and members of the “1st Michigan Light
Artillery Battery B" will re-create a Civil War Encampment.

The Sisters of the Union portray the 1860s lifestyle of the women who provided care, help and support for the Union Army. They will do soap- and candle-making demonstrations, show how wool was spun and dyed, as well as how people of the time cooked over an open fire.

The Battery B soldiers will show how daily in-camp duties were performed as well as demonstrate how equipment was cleaned. Various artillery projectiles, cannon balls and more will also be on display.

The 102nd USCT Colored Regiment of Michigan will join the encampment this year as well. They will be demonstrating their life in camp during the Civil War era.
