Have a Blast at the Stony Creek Fourth of July Fireworks

All the info you need to know to have the best and brightest Fourth of July fireworks in Stony Creek Metropark.

They’re loud, they’re bright and they’re big: fireworks!

And this year, the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration will be on July 2 at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township. The booms and bangs will start at 10:10 p.m. at Baypoint Beach, but the Operations Administrator Gary Hopp recommends viewers arrive early to claim their spot.

The fireworks, which began in 2000, are a joint operation between the park and Washington Township and are co-sponsored by Huntington Bank and the Washington Township Board of Trustees. While the fireworks are free for you, except for the vehicle entry permit of an annual pass or a $5 fee, they definitely are not free to put on.  It costs $10,000 to run the fireworks operations with the metropark paying $8,000 and Washington Township paying the other $2,000.

Being an outdoor event, the fireworks display is weather dependent, but residents are still encouraged to come out despite the drizzle. Essentially, don’t let the weather rain on your Fourth of July parade! But here are some tips to make the holiday even better and brighter.

  • Want to see the fireworks but don’t want to get caught in the crowd? Check out some of the other beaches or picnic sites in the park for prime viewing without the hustle and bustle.
  • If you want to have a truly free fireworks experience, try making camp on the hill right outside the park entrance where you still can see the fireworks fill the sky but keep your wallet full at the same time.
  • Right around 10 p.m. is when the late-night munchies start to grumble, so come prepared. Feel free to pack a picnic basket or some bags of snacks to satisfy those cravings. My personal recommendation: Pop Rocks, it’s like fireworks in your mouth! (NOTE: no glass containers or alcohol are allowed.)
  • If it does start to rain and you really want to keep dry, try parking your car in one of the nearby parking lots outside the metropark. You should still get a pretty good view while keeping your hair silky smooth at the same time.
  • If you do decide to venture into the park (or hangout on the hill outside), make sure to bring a blanket or chair so you can be at your upmost comfort when the booms and bangs begin.
