Largest National Food Drive Comes to Your Mailbox Saturday

Letter carriers are asking Macomb residents to leave canned goods for the needy on Saturday.

When letter carriers check your mailbox for stamped letters this Saturday, they also will be looking for nonperishable food items.

The NALC will be holding its 19th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive May 14.

Letter carriers in Macomb will join the NALC’s nationwide efforts to collect nonperishable food products.

All residents need to do to participate is leave nonperishable food items in a bag near their mailboxes before their letter carrier arrives on the day of the collection.

The food will then be delivered to the Macomb Food Program, which distributes food to 55 pantries across the county.

Requests for emergency food in Macomb County have increased 15 percent over last year, according to Sue Figurski, Macomb Food Program coordinator.

Last year alone, 77.1 million pounds of food were picked up around the country.  This event is the nation's largest one-day effort to combat hunger, according to the NALC.
