VIDEO: Basset Hound's Military Costume Reminds Family of Hero Abroad

A uniform-sporting Basset Hound wins a top honor at Wags n' Tails costume contest Saturday.

There were athletes, celebrity-look alikes, best-dressed and even princesses at the annual costume contest Saturday afternoon. Competing for a chance to win a title and a slew of great prizes, the dogs were adorned in all sorts of wacky outfits.

However, one family in particular had a different reason for dressing up their pooch.

Sporting a green camouflage coat and matching cap, Travis Twit the Basset Hound, was walked down the runway and past the judges’ table by Madison Denhardt of Macomb Township.

Denhardt’s grandmother, Marilyn Varilone, accompanied her to event and helped select the perfect costume for their five-year old dog as well as for Denhardt herself. The idea for the military uniforms was influenced by Denhardt’s father who is serving his third military position, and has been gone for almost one year. Currently, he is in active deployment, training to go to Afghanistan in early 2012.

Receiving a roomful of applause, Travis Twit would go on win the title of ‘Breaking News’ dog, decided on by judge and fellow Shelby-Utica Patch editor Marina Cracchiolo.

The family refers to Travis' outfit as a reminder of their beloved family member, and the honoring of a hero.

Varilone said she's passionate about Basset Hounds and belongs to the Michigan Basset Hound Rescue, which is dedicated to finding Hounds a permanent home. For more information, visit www.MichiganBassetRescue.org.
