Shelby Diver Finds Message in a Bottle in Lake St. Clair

The owner of a Shelby Township dive shop reportedly found a near century-old letter in a bottle, and the quest is on to find the descendants of the authors.

Dave Leander, owner of Great Lakes Divecenter in Shelby Township, found a message in a bottle dropped into Lake St. Clair nearly 97 years ago while diving in Lake St. Clair, according to a story in The Detroit Free Press.

Leander reportedly found a corked bottle with the note “Having a good time at Tashmoo” while diving last June in northern Lake St. Clair where the steamship Tashmoo once docked at Harsens Island.

The note was written June 30, 1915, by Detroit residents Selina Pramstaller and Tillie Esper according to the story. The Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Historical Society recently learned of the bottle, the story stated, and are trying to locate the descendants of the letter writers.

The story stated anyone who knows the letter writers is asked to contact the historical society at (586) 530-7100.
