Special Needs Carnival Planned

Special-needs students from across Macomb County have been invited to a carnival organized just for them on May 21 from 1-4 p.m. Elementary age special needs students will blow bubbles, play musical instruments, practice their aim, watch a puppet show, and enjoy some classic carnival food.

This event is the result of months of planning and fundraising by two high school students at the Utica Academy for International Studies.  Grant Ogden and Zach Wyrzykowski are juniors at the Academy.  Completing a project like this is just one of the unique requirements to qualify for an International Baccalaureate diploma.

“We put a lot of thought into the activities we chose for the carnival” said Grant Ogden. “We wanted to stimulate a range of senses, and provide enough variety that everyone could find an activity that really caught their attention.”  The kids will find 16 events and activities laid out in the Roberts gymnasium, including a very large cardboard box maze, and a 21st century version of a photo booth, where each child can be transported to an exotic location through the magic of digital photography.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the help of many supporters and volunteers. Dozens of students and parents will help run the events, and make sure the kids have a fun and safe time. The Dairy Queen at 25 Mile and Shelby Road, owned by Michael and Teresa Matthews, donated most of the food for the event. “

This free event will take place at Roberts Elementary School, in Shelby Township, north of 23 Mile, and west of Shelby Road.  All elementary-age special needs students are invited to attend.
