Shelby Township Man's Love of Outdoors Appears in Artwork

Joe Butts, a former art teacher, uses mixed media in his work. His work is being showcased this weekend at Art in the Park in Plymouth.

Shelby Township resident Joe Butts is a self-proclaimed Michigan man, born and raised.

His love of the outdoors shines through his artwork, which is displayed this year at the 34th Annual Plymouth Art in the Park

"I love Michigan and I love getting outdoors," Butts said.

Butts said he uses a lot of different materials in his art.

"I have a mixed media style... sculptural, wood, metal, concrete," he said. "I do some ceramics, I do some firing of clay and I do some drawing. So it's a number of different things."

Butts, a former art teacher, studied art at Michigan State University.

He is one of 75 new first-time vendors during this year's Plymouth Art in the Park.

"It's quite the show - it's big," he said. "I met some other artists at Rochester Arts and Apples last year and they suggested coming out here and checking it out. I've just heard a lot of good things about it."

Butts will be at Art in the Park through Sunday when the festival ends at 5 p.m. Locate his booth, number 420, on Forest Avenue.
