Macomb County's Contribution to the Automotive Industry

Headed to the North American International Auto Show? Here are some facts about Macomb County's impact on automotive industry.

Macomb County is playing a big role in the automotive industry and this year's North American International Auto Show.

The Car of the Year, the Cadillac ATS, was engineered and designed at the GM Tech Center in Warren.

The Ram 1500, which is the Truck/Utility of the Year, was assembled at the Warren Truck Plant.

“Macomb County has been well represented at the 2013 North American International Auto Show,” said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel in a release. “We have always had a long and successful connection with the industry and continue to be committed to it, encouraging investment in facilities and infrastructure while also developing a skilled and educated workforce to lead the way as the field continues to grow and change.”

Across Macomb County there are more than 41,000 people employed by the automotive industry in nearly 1,000 companies. Additionally, more than $2 billion has been invested into the Macomb County auto industry which has nine facilities in Macomb County including assembly plants and General Motors Tech Center, according to county officials.

Shelby Township and Utica are home to several car dealerships, including Motor City MINI, Meade Lexus of Lakeside, Bavarian Motor Village and Liberty Motors.

General Motors

  • 17,000 employees
  • Warren Transmission -- $325 million investment to retool/upgrade the facility (2011)
  • GM Technical Center -- adding 1,500 IT positions and a planned $300 million investment (2012)

Chrysler

  • 9,125 employees
  • Sterling Heights Assembly -- Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200 -- $850 million investment paint shop (2011)
  • Warren Truck --Dodge Ram -- adding 1,000 new workers with a third shift (2012)

  • Romeo Engine --$50 million investment to retool/upgrade facility (2011)
