Shelby Township residents will be able to savor the sweet summer nights a little longer when Menchie's Frozen Yogurt opens at the Vitale Plaza on 25 and Van Dyke roads.

Life is about to get a little sweeter for frozen treat-lovers with the opening of a  new frozen yogurt shop in Shelby Township.

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, located inside the Vitale Plaza on 25 Mile and Van Dyke, is set to open in mid-May.

The Shelby Township location will be the first franchise to open in Michigan, but there are more than 200 locations around the world in countries as far away as Saudia Arabia and New Zealand.

Menchie's motto is smile before you mix, weigh and pay. The yogurt is paid for by weight—not topping—at a cost of 45 cents per ounce. There will always be 14 rotating flavors of frozen yogurt out of 140 flavors, ranging from the standard chocolate and vanila to exotic flavors such as Irish mint and mango tart. Toppings will range from fresh, locally-grown fruit to chocolate, sprinkles and nuts.

There will be an option for most everyone as Menchie's will feature fat-free yogurt, Kosher, gluten-free and no-sugar added flavors.

"I think people will be surprised at how rich the frozen yogurt really is," said Shelby Township franchise owner Jyl Messina.

This will be the first Menchie's for Jyl and her husband, Lou Messina. However, the couple said if all goes well, they plan to open several more locations in Michigan.

"Menchie's will be the largest soft-serve frozen yogurt franchise in the world by June," said Lou Messina.

The Messinas told Patch they chose to open the first franchise in Shelby because it's where they live. Also, they chose the location based on the family-friendly businesses that are already established in the Vitale Plaza, such as , K-9 Cuisine and More and

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt remains under construction, but come April, the yogurt shop should be up and running, and will even have an outdoor patio with furniture and heated lamps.
