Shelby Township Snags Spot on CNN's List of Best Small Towns to Live In

CNN Money named Shelby Township one of the top 100 best small towns in America to live in.

Shelby Township was voted the 78th Best Small City in America in which to live, according to CNNMoney.com.

Other Michigan cities to make the prestigious list were Troy at 26, West Bloomfield at No. 37, Macomb Township No. 84 and Ann Arbor at the bottom, No. 100.

Carmel, IN, was voted the No. 1 best small city in America in which to live.

The list is based on several factors ranging from real estate; job opportunities; education rates; crime statistics supplied by the Federal Bureau of Investigation; health care; quality of life factors such as young population, shortest commutes; things to do and clean air.

The website describes Shelby Township as being just "45 minutes from Detroit but feel(ing) worlds away." It goes on to say the community has a rural feel with lots of parks, great schools and low crime rates.

The unemployment rate, which is at 9.8 percent however, is higher than the average area unemployment rate. 

CNN Money erroneously printed that in "June there was a major fire in the small downtown, which destroyed three historic buildings and several local businesses."

A quick Google search turned up that a small fire did tear through the city of Shelby, in Oceana County on the west side of Michigan on June 11, according to WOOD TV.
