Utica Borders Among Hundreds to Close

Local store among 200 to close nationwide as part of the bookstore's bankruptcy. Stores in Dearborn, Ann Arbor and Grosse Pointe will close as well.

Borders has announced that its 30,000-square foot store at 45290 Utica Park Blvd. will be closing as part of the company's bankruptcy reorganization.

The Ann Arbor-based company announced a list of 200 closures throughout the country Wednesday as part of its efforts to reorganize after filing for bankruptcy. The Utica store is one of four in Michigan that will close. The other locations are in Grosse Pointe, Ann Arbor and Dearborn.

The Utica store employs 25 people, Borders spokesman Jeremy Fielding told Patch Wednesday, adding that it was too early to determine whether the company would try to shift employees from the closed locations to those that are remaining open.

It also was too early to determine whether inventory would be transferred to stores remaining open or marked down and cleared out, he said.

The company operates 642 stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico and employs 6,100 full-time employees and more than 11,000 part-time employees, according to the bankruptcy filing.
