Winter Gives Erma's Frozen Custard Time to Prep for Busy Season

Known for its Custard Puff, Erma's has been in business for 69 years and opened a second location last summer.

in Shelby Township spends the winter preparing for another busy year of serving frozen custard and its famous Custard Puff.

Erma’s is closed for the winter, but that does not mean the manager, Cindy Schoenherr, gets a vacation. So what do seasonal business employees do all year?

Schoenherr attended The Great Lakes Ice Cream and Fast Food Association’s 44th annual Convention and Trade Show held in Lansing this February. The three-day weekend was spent in seminars on various topics, such as training, marketing strategies, new products and planning off-site events.

Schoenherr said there may even be a new item added to Erma’s menu.

During the winter, the weekly flavors are also decided for the 30 weeks they are open. Schoenherr said they try to get a couple new flavors every year, but they always have their famous flavors.

Wild Erma, pumpkin, strawberry and butter pecan are a few of the customers’ favorite flavors of the week.

“On a day-to-day basis, good ole vanilla probably beats out everything,” Schoenherr said.

Since the building started as a small garage, it needs to be winterized. Cleaning, organizing, stocking and contacting staff are also tasks to complete.

In June, a second Erma’s Frozen Custard opened in Warren on 14 Mile Road, east of Dequindre. Schoenherr said they do not have any specific plans as of now to open additional locations, but they are open to possibilities.

Regardless of the weather, Erma’s Frozen Custard opens April 1 at 11 a.m.
