Real Estate and Home Alarms

In real estate, there is never a dull moment!  Whether its dealing different people and their problems, or its walking thru crazy and weird houses its always entertaining.  One of my favorite moments from this summer was with some great clients of mine.  We were up in the northern Macomb Twp. Area looking at a home.  The home was private owned, but it was vacant. When a Realtor schedules a showing of a property you will receive text messages with "showing instructions."  The instructions can be as simple as a lock box code or it can be a message to lock the doors and shut off the lights.  This particular home that we were looking at had alarm code instructions.  Anytime I get alarm code instructions I tend to get a bit nervous lol!  It seems that no two alarms are alike.  And it also seems that the instructions are never correct!

When we arrived at this house, I let my clients know about the alarm.  I assured them that the alarm would go off and that I had the code.  I also laughed and assured them that the code was wrong because they always are!  Sure enough we get into this home, and I can't seem to get the alarm off.  I have my clients walk thru the home while I attempt to shut this thing off!  After nearly 10 minutes,  I get the alarm shut off.  Of course,  we are not interested in the house so now I have to try and reset the alarm.  I have the clients wait outside, and I spend another 10 minutes or so trying to get the alarm turned on.  I can only imagine what they were thinking! Probably something along the lines of this guys nuts!  Finally I think I get the alarm set, and we leave the property.  We manage to get about a mile down the street and my phone rings. It's the appointment center.  I answer the phone, and they ask if it was me just at the  property because they got a call from the alarm company and the alarm is going off!

I have my clients go on to the next house, and I turn back.  When I get there, I am greeted by the Macomb County Sheriff.  As I pull up, the officer didn't know whom I was or that I was the one who set the alarm off, so he was a bit suspicious of me.  After I explained the situation and took him into the house, he verified my story with the alarm company.  He and I then proceeded to spend an additional 20 minutes on the phone with the alarm company before finally they had me call the seller directly.  After speaking with the seller, I turned the alarm off in about 3 seconds flat!

The moral of the story is that if you have an alarm on your home, please, please, please make sure that your proper codes are recorded so that we don't have to first of all waste my clients time, but more importantly waste our Sheriff's time on false alarms.  My favorite part of this story is that my father was a Macomb County Sheriff.  I lost my dad 2 years ago.  When I started to talk to the responding officer and introduced myself he knew and worked with my dad and had a lot of great things to say about him which made me happy happy happy!  If you're looking to sell your home......buy a home.....invest in real estate.....or start a career in real estate contact me today!  Happy Monday!
