Foods that stain your teeth

Many of the foods we eat every day can stain your teeth (even those “good for you” foods, rich in vitamins and antioxidants). In order to keep your smile bright, white and healthy, take note of these foods that stain teeth:

Tea—black tea is one of the worst offenders, but herbal and white teas can be harmful as well.

Sauces—darker ones like soy sauce, tomato sauce, and curry sauce.

Sports drinks—these highly acidic drinks can erode enamel, which can lead to stains.

Wine—red wines have a reputation for causing discoloration and stains. However, white wine can also lead to stains, as it is highly acidic.

Berries—colorful and dark fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and cherries.

Pop/soda and carbonated drinks—both dark and light colored pop are acidic.

Candy and sweets—if it can stain your tongue, it can stain your teeth.

I am not saying you have to eliminate these foods from your diet (especially tea and berries). As with everything else, consume in moderation. Here are a few tips
for minimizing staining:

  • Use a straw when drinking juice, pop and iced tea

  • Swallow swiftly to keep the stain causing foods to linger in your mouth

  • Rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth to wash the acid away.
