Macomb Restaurant Week Kicks Off Today

The Sterling Heights and Anchor Bay chambers of commerce have pioneered the area's first restaurant week April 25-29.

Macomb County has some marvelous restaurants. To celebrate, the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Anchor Bay Chamber of Commerce have set aside a week to commemorate the tastes of Macomb.

Inspired by Oakland County's example (Troy's in particular), "we thought we'd try our own (week) and give restaurants the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community and drum up awareness," says Patricia Le Duc, SHRCCI communications coordinator.

The inaugural Macomb Restaurant Week, aka Marvelous Macomb, is April 25-29. It's spread broadly around the northern parts of the county, with participating chamber members highlighting their culinary creations.

There's no added cost to celebrate restaurant week, save for the price of dining out, and participating eateries are offering deals as added incentive to drop in and dine, often in the form of 25 percent discounts or two-for-one deals. Just tell your server you're dining there as part of Restaurant Week and enjoy your discounted pasta, wings, specialty burger, wild game, or whatever you desire.

Proceeds benefit the Macomb Charitable Foundation, manned by volunteers who help families and children living at or below poverty level by providing food, clothing, rent/utility help, mentoring and more.

"We concentrate most of our efforts on helping homeless children in the community," said Shelly Penzien, foundation president.

"We are extremely grateful that the chamber has chosen Macomb Charitable as a recipient of their Restaurant Week profits," she added. "We promise to be good stewards of this gift and make a true difference in the life of a child right here in Macomb County."

Wayne Oehmke, chamber president, said it was a perfect fit to help the foundation. "We're glad to have them on board," since they do such a great job for families and children in the community.

Penzien shares one story about a family the foundation has helped: The father, mother and four children were reduced to sleeping in a van and stopping at stores and fast-food places to wash up. The foundation helped this family put a security deposit together for housing and bought beds for the children and more. "Thanks to our supporters, these children are no longer sleeping in a van," Penzien adds.

Should you want to make a day of it, try the Grub Crawl 5:30-9:30 p.m. April 27. This event happens twice a year, but this year it's nicely nestled into Restaurant Week's calendar.

Nine restaurants are participating, including Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant, Brann's Steakhouse, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Longhorn Steakhouse, Maceri's Soup and Scoop, Outback Steakhouse, Roosevelt's, Wildwood Friendly Tavern and Sherwood Brewing Company. Cost is $25 per person. People can sign up and tour the participating restaurants or take advantage of the shuttle transport available between restaurants, so it's all about the dining without the driving.
