Heat Is on the Streets as Construction Warms Up

Road construction still hobbles motorists across metropolitan Detroit.

With temperatures heating up, motorists have even more headaches to worry about while on the roads this week.

Work was scheduled to start Monday on the Parkdale Road bridge over Stoney Creek. The road will be closed at the bridge, which is between Letica and Dequindre; through traffic will not be allowed. The road is expected to reopen Sept. 1.

“We recognize that the closure of Parkdale Road will be an inconvenience for area residents and businesses,” said Eric Wilson, chairman of the Road Commission for Oakland County. “However, this bridge is in need of replacement, and there is no way to replace a bridge without closing the road."

The suggested detour route is Dequindre Road to Avon Road to Rochester Road to Romeo Road and vice versa.

Starting Thursday, the northbound I-75 ramp to westbound M-59 will be closed through July 23. The posted detour utilizes the northbound I-75 ramp to eastbound M-59 and the northbound Squirrel Road ramp to westbound M-59.

In conjunction, the southbound I-75 ramp to eastbound M-59 is closed through Wednesday, June 15.

In Wayne County, eastbound I-94 at Haggerty Road will experience lane closures during the day on Saturday. As part of the project, the ramp from southbound Haggerty Road is closed for construction Saturday too.

Starting Monday, northbound and southbound Allen Road over I-69 in Port Huron will be closed for bridge painting until the end of the month.

Not everything is bleak as there are a handful of projects that are wrapping up over the next couple of days.

One long-term project that is actually winding down is the single lane closure of southbound I-275 over Van Born Road. That project is scheduled to be finished at 7 a.m. Friday.

In St. Clair County, eastbound I-69 from M-19 to Stapleton Road is also scheduled to be finished at midnight Monday after a right lane closure slowed traffic for the entire week.

Another long project slated to be finished Monday in St. Clair County is eastbound and westbound I-69 from Riley Center Road to Burt Road.

The connector ramp for westbound I-94 to I-69 also reopens at 7 a.m. Friday.

The southbound I-75 ramp to Northline Road in Wayne County reopened earlier this week.

In addition, the Lapeer connector ramp at westbound I-94/I-69 is scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Friday.

In Wayne County, eastbound and westbound McNichols over M-39–which has been closed since February–also should reopen at 3 p.m. Friday.

Following is a list of other construction projects that are still active in the area:

  • In Macomb County, westbound I-696 has single lane closures between Wagner Road and Gratiot. In addition, the westbound I-696 service drive from Gratiot to Mound also has intermittent single-lane closures.
  • In Macomb County, eastbound and westbound I-94 between Eight Mile and 11 Mile has single-lane closures daily for lighting work until June 30.
  • In St. Clair County, the eastbound I-94/I-69 ramp from Water Street is closed until Sept. 25.
  • In Wayne County, the westbound Eight Mile Road bridge to southbound M-39 service drive is closed until the end of August for bridge demolition and reconstruction.
