In 2012, there were 142 residential building permits issued in Shelby Township, according to The Detroit News

From 2000 to 2012, there were 2,875 permits pulled, boosting Shelby Township to third place in metro Detroit, followed only behind Canton Township with 3,331 and Macomb Township with 8,960.
