State Fair Taking Extra Precautions for Health of Animals, People

Organizers of the Great Lakes State Fair announced Monday that extra precautions are being taken to ensure the health and safety of the animals and attendees at the revived Michigan state fair. The event takes place Friday through Monday at in Novi.

“We’re taking proactive steps to protect fairgoers and animals by partnering with Elite Surface Shield (ESS) to ensure the complete health and safety of our animals and attendees, making our fair Michigan’s first Bio-Secure event,” said Jackie Scramlin, agricultural manager of the Great Lakes State Fair Board, in a statement.

All of the fair’s high-touch surfaces, including concession areas, animal pens and rest rooms, will be treated with ESS’s long-lasting non-toxic, antimicrobial protective coating. This product destroys germs and helps protect against the spread of harmful bacteria, fungus, viruses, yeast, mold, algae and odor. The protectant lasts from 50 to 90 days and works around the clock to protect against the spread of deadly viruses and infectious diseases.

Hand washing and sanitizing stations will also be available throughout the fairgrounds. All livestock, including dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits, poultry, pigs and horses will be closely inspected prior to being cleared for participation and competition at the fair.
