More than two weeks later and dozens of attempts to try and reconnect a lost Yorkie with his owner, a young couple has decided to adopt the adorable pooch.
"We call him Georgie after Curious George because he got lost," said Nina Castellana, who found the lost dog on Sept. 10 outside her home on 25 and Dequindre while walking her own Yorkie Poo.
Castellana said the tag-less dog was trembling with fear when she picked him up, but didn't appear to be outside for very long. He was well-groomed and mostly potty-trained, she said of the dog.
The 21-year-old and her boyfriend, Sam Marino, have posted fliers in Shelby Township and Rochester, because the dog was found on the border of the two towns. They've also reached out to Patch in hopes that the dog's owner is a viewer, and posted lost dog ads on Craigslist.
Since then, the couple has been bombarded with calls. Some from offers to adopt the dog, and some claiming they are the rightful owner of the purebred Yorkie, which is retailed at anywhere between $500 and $2,000.
Castellana said her goal has always been to help connect the dog to its rightful owner, but at this point, they have decided to treat him as their own.
"Our goal was to find the owner. We would be at peace only if we found the owner, otherwise he'll stay with us," she told Patch.
Georgie has been taken to the veterinarian and given a clean bill of health, but they have decided to re-administer his shots because there is no way to know if he's up-to date.
For now, the pooch will stay at Marino's Shelby Township home because Castellana said her own Yorkie Poo is jealous of the new dog in town.
