Wake Up, Shelby and Utica: June 30

Here's the quick scoop on the news for Utica and Shelby Township.

Here’s all the news you need to know to get going on the last day of June 2011.

  1. Thursday shapes up to be a mostly pleasant day, weather-wise, with partly cloudy skies and a high near 81 degrees. There is a 30 percent chance of rain tonight, though.
  2. Congratulations to adviser Erica Kincannon and the journalism students at , who snagged awards from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association for their work on the newspaper and yearbook.
  3. In the mood for some cool tunes? Then head over to tonight at 9:30 to hear Dave Hamilton.
  4. Meet Kyle Simon, one of Shelby Township’s newest firefighters. Simon can’t wait to serve the community. “You get to rush out of the garage and know that you will be helping someone," he said.
  5. From firefighters to fireworks, let the countdown begin. There are only two more days until the big fireworks bash at Baypoint Beach on July 2 at 10:10 p.m. Plan on getting there early to get a good view, and check out these tips to get the best photos of the fireworks.
