Is this the Ugliest Holiday Sweater in Shelby Township?

Kensington Metropark is a beautiful place for a run – usually. But on Saturday, Nov. 9, it was truly hideous. More than 500 people bedecked in the most garish holiday attire marred the picturesque scenery as part of the inaugural Hideous Holiday Sweater Run, a one-mile and 5k race benefitting the Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter.

Pamela Lumetta of Shelby Township won the award for “most heinous sweater” with a design that has to be seen to be believed.

“It was tacky. It was kitschy. It was downright gaudy. We couldn’t have been more delighted,” said Laura Dyas, executive director for the Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter. “The park was awash with so much bad fashion, the wildlife sought refuge. We are truly thankful to everyone who joined us. Beautiful scenery, great food and drink, community– and horrible fashion were enjoyed by all.”

Prizes were awarded for the most heinous sweater, and for the fastest three runners at each distance. Following the race, participants enjoyed a buffet of treats featuring piping hot soup donated from Zoup!, gourmet cupcakes compliments of Just Baked and tasty microbrew samples from Witch’s Hat Brewing Company. In addition to supporting the Scleroderma Foundation, racers brought canned goods for Forgotten Harvest.

The 2014 Hideous Holiday Sweater Run is scheduled for Nov. 8, 2014 at Kensington Metropark. Based on the popularity of the first year, event organizers are adding a 13k (8 miles) around Kent Lake.

The Scleroderma Foundation Michigan Chapter is part of the largest patient-based organization in the U.S. dedicated to providing the support, advocacy and research necessary to provide counsel for patients, and ultimately help discover a cure.
