Shelby Township Police, Knights of Columbus Teaming Up to Benefit Vets

Donate clean, gently-used coats between Nov. 22 and Dec. 9.

Sadly, there are thousands of United States Veterans who return to the Detroit area from protecting our county only to find themselves homeless. The weather has turned cold and these veterans are on the street without warm coats.

The Shelby Township Police Department in conjunction with the 4th degree Knight of Columbus Bishop Schoenherr Assembly from Romeo have committed to helping the AMVETS Department of Michigan in collecting items for these men and women. There are currently 358 homeless veterans located in 9 shelters who will be the first to receive the coats. The VA has documented an additional 2,700 homeless veterans in Southeastern Michigan who are also in need. We are hoping to help each and every one of them. The coats will be distributed from the Veterans Resource Center in Detroit and the Ann Arbor VA Hospital, where the homeless veterans come for treatment.

Please check you closets for clean, “gently used” men’s and women’s coats that you are no longer wearing and would like to donate. The coats will be given to those who have protected us and our County. Please bring your “gently used” coats that you want to donate to the lobby of the Shelby Township Police Department and place them in the collection box between the dates of Nov. 22 and Dec. 9.
