New Middle Eastern Cookbook "Sitto's Kitchen, A Treasury of Syrian Family Recipes"

"Sitto's Kitchen", is a collection of treasured recipes and memories brought by the author's grandmother, a 14-year-old Syrian immigrant, to Ellis Island in 1912.

Century-old Syrian recipes are revealed in this unique cookbook that is part biography. Dog Ear Publishing releases a new book by Janice Jweid Reed that features original recipes from the author’s immigrant grandmother along with contemporary cooking tips and memories associated with each dish.  Readers are invited to learn the Syrian culture as they explore this distinctive cuisine.

“Sitto’s Kitchen: A Treasury of Syrian Family Recipes Taught from Mother to Daughter for Over 100 Years” offers more than a distinctive cuisine to adventurous cooks and those who want to recapture their own heritage. Reed includes family memories, commentaries and helpful preparation tips for each dish. She reminisces about her grandmother’s breakfast biscuits (Kahek) flavored with fennel seed and anise.  Favorite dishes like Aunt Zekeya’s Tabbouleh salad and a spring yogurt salad, which traditionally heralded springtime, colorfully capture her heritage.  She recounts a fundraising gala for St. Jude Hospital led by Danny Thomas and the fava bean dip served.  Reed includes both the English and Arabic names for all dishes, inviting young cooks to learn about this culture while exploring its cuisine and the history surrounding it. She showcases a tradition of hospitality learned at her grandmother’s side. Color and B&W Photos, a guide to cook’s tools, pantry staples, a glossary and list of places to buy the more exotic ingredients and spices round out this homage to Middle Eastern cuisine.
