New Years Resolutions: What do You Really Want? And how to make it happen!

How to make New Years Resolutions that stick!

Big question isn’t it? Think hard about it though. Is your goal to lose 10,20, or even 50 lbs ? How you are going to get there? It can seem overwhelming at first. But lets break it down into more manageable steps.

What is your goal?
  1. Write it down.
  2. Be as specific as possible.
Example:

Long term goal:

I want to lose 30 lbs by the end of 2013.

  1. Is it to look good for an event?
  2. Is it because you were diagnosed as a diabetic and do not want to go on insulin?
  3. Is it to prevent heart disease that runs in your family?
  4. Do you just want more energy?
  5. Is there a certain outfit you want to fit into?

The whys help to drive you during the process.

It is important to set up short-term goals that help you reach the long term goal. Each short term goal you met should some sort of reward attached to it. Preferably not food related.

Short --term goal:

For each day that I am successful with a “perfect eating day” I will spend 5 minutes reflecting on how awesome I feel that I was able to be successful and write in my journal the pride I feel. I will thank those who have supported me in big and small ways and share my happiness with others.

If you are having difficulty with this exercise, do consider a health professional who can assist you through this process. This sounds easy but we can get lost in our heads, not really spend the time sorting out our thoughts or have difficulty sorting out the thoughts because we have so many.

Tomorrow I will talk about how to makeover your kitchen to set you up for success.
