Back to School and Babies

Five easy ideas to help prepare your family for the new school year now that your new baby has arrived.

It's back to school time and as a postpartum doula that means it's time to ease the transition for families with newborns as their older siblings go back to school.  I think these tips can apply to families with young children as well.

Practice makes Perfect   There are only a few days left before most schools start so use these last few days to practice your typical morning routine.  Getting up early and going through the motions of getting ready for school will help the whole family get used to the school year routine.  A few practice mornings will help you work out any possible kinks before school actually begins.

Be Independent   Encourage your school age children to be independent as they get ready for school.  Even kindergarteners can get dressed and brush their teeth after breakfast without help.  I encourage you to help your children get their backpacks and outfits ready the night before a school day to keep it simple in the morning.

Food Shortcuts  Preparing lunches, snacks and drinks can also be an independent activity if you plan ahead.  Come up with a list to choose from and/or discuss possibilities with your children.  Have accessible snacks and lunch items so children can do most of the preparation themselves.  I always ask my kids what they have packed or chat with them as they prepare their food so I can help monitor good choices.

Babies  You many wonder how a baby fits into this whole get ready for school routine.  The easiest way to keep baby content while you help your other children get ready for school is to wear your baby in a wrap, sling, or carrier.  I prefer a Moby Wrap for young babies and the Ergo for older babies, but there are countless options available.  You may also want to nurse, or feed your baby before everyone else needs your attention.

Sibling Adjustment  When a new baby comes along a family changes and new siblings may wonder where they fit in.  Encourage your older children to tell their new baby brother or sister about their school day or read baby a book.  Let children know that the baby is listening even if he/she can't really respond yet.  These is a wonderful ways for them to bond with and enjoy their new sister or brother.

These are just a few ideas to help get the school year off to a good start.  Of course, with a new baby in the house I always suggest hiring a postpartum doula to support your family.  It's amazing how support from a doula can enhance the transition of adding a new little person to your family.
