Have you thought about the support you will need after you have a baby? These are commonly asked questions about hiring a postpartum doula.

Q.  I know a lot about babies why would I need a Postpartum Doula?

A.  Whether you are a first time mom or have 5 kids at home, hiring a postpartum doula will make your life easier in the days after your baby is born by caring for you and your baby.

Q.  Isn't it weird having a stranger in your home?

A.  A postpartum doula is only a stranger the first time you meet her.  I suggest interviewing several postpartum doulas while you are pregnant so you can decide with whom you are most comfortable.  There are also a few Meet the Doula opportunities around Metro Detroit.  Check out - Beautiful Beginnings Doula Services at The Authentic Living Center in Troy, they host Metro Detroit Doulas on the third Thursday of even numbered months, at 7:30pm.  The next one is on October 18th.  You can also attend Meet the Doulas at Providence Hospital at the Fisher Auditorium on September 12 at 6pm.  Both events are free.

Q.  What should I look for in when hiring a Postpartum Doula?

A.  When hiring any professional who works in your home, you should ask for references.  You can also ask about training, and certifications.  Not all doulas are trained, but some choose that route.  You can search for trained doulas through Doulas of North America (DONA) or Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA).  Many doulas are also trained in infant CPR.

Q.  How much does a Postpartum Doula cost?

A.  There are several options so that everyone can afford a Postpartum Doula.  Doulas Care is a great option for low income families, they will set you up with either a birth or postpartum doula.  Doulas who are working toward certification often charge a low rate or work for free.  The postpartum doulas I've talked with in our area charge between $18-$40 an hour.  Most postpartum doulas ask that you hire them for a minimum amount of hours so they are an effective resource.

Q. Why not hire a babysitter?

A.  Postpartum doulas specialize in the early weeks after a baby is born.  We typically only work with families for the first few weeks of their baby's life.  We help with breastfeeding.  We are knowledgeable about what normal recovery looks like for mom.  We will help your household run smoothly so you can bond with your baby and rest.  We are willing to help clean, do laundry, cook, and help other children adjust to having a new baby in the home.  One of the most important aspects of postpartum doula care is evidence-based care, we offer techniques based on what research shows to be the best care for infants.  Each family is different, so their needs are different.  A postpartum doula will work to support those needs.
